SPEDA would like to congratulate Dr. Roger Huston as he prepares to begin his new role as President of Williamson College in Franklin, Tennessee.

Throughout his time as Vice President of Rural Advancement at Campbellsville University, Roger was a tireless advocate for rural communities across Kentucky, helping local leaders build partnerships, advance initiatives and create opportunities for long-term growth. Somerset and Pulaski County were among the many communities that benefited from his leadership.

We are grateful for Roger's dedication to strengthening rural Kentucky. Please join us in congratulating him on this well-deserved opportunity and wishing him continued success in this next chapter.

Hendrickson Trailer Somerset, one of the largest employers in the Valley Oak Commerce Complex, has announced a $13 million expansion of its manufacturing facility — a multi-phase project that will add 15,000 square feet and create up to 30 jobs during the next three years.

We were excited to see representatives from the Kentucky FAME - Cumberlands Chapter participate in the FAME USA National Conference, where they joined industry leaders from across the country to share ideas, strengthen partnerships and explore new ways to connect students with high-demand careers in advanced manufacturing.

A special congratulations to SPEDA CFO Jessica Carlton, who continues to play a vital leadership role in our chapter's success. In addition to serving as the hub administrator, Jessica was selected to participate in a conference panel discussion and collaborated on another, sharing best practices and insights with FAME leaders from across the nation.

We're grateful for Jessica's commitment to workforce development and proud of the leadership our local chapter continues to demonstrate on a national stage.

If you've been to Dairy Queen in Somerset, you've done business with the Cheshires, who have owned and operated the DQ franchise here since 1970.

Starting as Burger Queen, then evolving to Druther's, and now Dairy Queen, father Gene and son Dan Cheshire have grown their franchise with an emphasis on giving back to the community. With six stores now under the franchise umbrella — including the Somerset, Russell Springs, Manchester, and Cincinnati markets — the family anticipates adding a seventh location in south Somerset within the next year.

Congratulations to our Spring 2026 Triple Bag Challenge winners! 🎉 Southwestern High School sophomore Rupert Farshi received the $500 grand prize for picking up three bags of trash along Somerset-Pulaski County roadways. The following students also received prizes for participating:

SPEDA has officially launched its search for the organization’s next President & Chief Executive Officer.

Applications will be accepted beginning today, June 1, and continuing through 4 p.m. ET on July 31. The SPEDA Board of Directors will conduct a comprehensive search process and review all applications before scheduling interviews. A selection is expected in fall 2026.

We’re grateful to SMPS Kentucky for inviting SPEDA President & CEO Chris Girdler to participate in this week’s Economic Development Panel in Frankfort alongside leaders from across Kentucky and the region.

The conversation focused on the future of economic development — including workforce growth, infrastructure and funding strategies, public-private partnerships, and the evolving role of the architecture/engineering and construction industry in helping communities and businesses move projects forward.

Events like this create valuable opportunities to share ideas, discuss challenges, and strengthen the relationships that continue driving progress in the Commonwealth. We appreciate the thoughtful discussion and collaboration from everyone involved.

SPEDA President and CEO Chris Girdler was honored to attend and support this monumental project that will power our region. This project complements upgrades happening at Cooper Power Station in Somerset-Pulaski County, which will make this coal-fired plant a dual-purpose facility that will strengthen the region’s power supply. We are grateful to East Kentucky Power Cooperative for its continued investment in our people and our future.
