Today’s a great day to spotlight the most effective pest control the farm has ever seen- our farm cats PawPaw and Nightshade! 🐾

Their combined love of chasing small critters has all but eliminated pest damage on our crops from animals like rabbits and squirrels. We’ve even seen them hunting grasshoppers away from our fields.

Last week our team harvested what many consider their favorite crops to grow- garlic! Around 400 of these massive garlic heads will be saved for seed, and the rest will find their way to CSA shares and our farmers markets. Each individual clove of garlic will produce its own head after nine months in the soil!

Our cold winter and colder, wetter, spring, are the perfect conditions for growing large heads of garlic. We’re so excited for the curing process to finish so these lovely heads can find their way into your shopping bins.

Last Saturday, we were honored to host a first-of-its-kind event—Forage & Feast—a family-oriented field to table educational and dinner experience. Little ones were able to learn about the farm, go on a scavenger hunt, and harvest food from the field which they then prepared and, with the help of Chef Ernesto (El Molcajete Sauces), turned into a delicious meal!

Thank you so much to Crunchy Culture Chicago for putting together this event, to Finn's Ranch for providing beef for the burgers, and to Green Light Speech Therapy for sponsoring!

All photos taken by sotosama. Thank you!!

Stay tuned for future family-friendly events at the farm. In the meantime, you can buy tickets now for our upcoming farm dinner at the link in our bio. 🌱👩🏻‍🌾

Last Friday, we welcomed a group of 30 youth from the Chicago Junior Youth Spiritual Empowerment program. The team worked (and played) through the pouring rain and mud to help us remove a whole bunch of w**ds encroaching on our fields. Swipe to the end for a before and after. Thank you thank you!

Our markets this week will feature a crop that’s mostly attributed as a w**d in American gardens- purslane! This low growing plant has tender shoots and succulent leaves that have a flavor profile most similar to spinach or swiss chard.

Long used in cooking for its health and medicinal properties, purslane contains more omega-3 fatty acids than any other leafy green, including spinach!

Best served sautéed or in soups, these crunchy greens give a flavor and health boost to any dish you use it in. Come grab a bag at our markets this week!

Cherries are officially in season! Closely related to almond trees, cherries have been cultivated as far back as 600 BC in China, for their delectable fruits, and their sweet smelling blossoms.

There are over 1,000 cherry varieties cultivated across the US, but the two varieties we have on the farm are Black York, and White Gold.

CSA members will find our cherries in their shares as long as they’re in season!
