This Pride Month, Shore celebrates the diversity, strength, and authenticity of the communities we serve.

According to the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, 36% of LGBTQ+ adults report having a disability, highlighting the important intersection between disability and LGBTQ+ identities.

At Shore, we believe every person deserves the freedom to make their own choices, live authentically, and be accepted for who they are. We are committed to fostering a community where dignity, belonging, and opportunity are available to all.

This month and every month, we celebrate inclusion, autonomy, and the right of every individual to live with pride.

75 Years - One Brilliant Story

Throughout our anniversary year, we’ll be highlighting important “chapters” of this story that make up the rich history and legacy of Shore Community Services, and our community’s commitment to inclusion over 75 years!

🌲This week’s chapter features the Christmas Tree sales that served as a fundraiser for many years. The ad below appeared in the December 8, 1966 edition of The Evanston Review*.

Shore School was where families from the area purchased their Christmas trees, which came from Bob's Tree Farm in Michigan. This long standing tradition took place for over 40 years.

(*Shore removed the r-word from its name in 1987, because it evolved from a clinical diagnosis into a dehumanizing slur. Replacing it with person-first language like "intellectual disability" ensures dignity and respect for everyone.)

75 Years - One Brilliant Story

Throughout our anniversary year, we’ll be highlighting important “chapters” of this story that make up the rich history and legacy of Shore Community Services, and our community’s commitment to inclusion over 75 years!

This week’s chapter features Shore School, which by 1960 was holding classes in the basement of the Bethlehem Lutheran School in Evanston. At the time, Shore was one of 43 organizations in the state providing educational services to children with developmental disabilities, when the field of special education was still very new. There were an estimated 150,000 children and adults with developmental disabilities in Illinois at that time.

Today, Shore serves over 200 children and adults in an array of programs, and there are approximately 600,000 people in the state with IDD. Each year, more than 40,000 children receive special education services in public schools.
