Why do volunteers spend a day cutting firewood? For that first warm fire after a cold ski in! ❄️🔥

On October 16, twelve STA volunteers showed up at Jefferson View Shelter with one goal: make sure everyone who reaches the shelter this winter finds a warm fire waiting.

Led by Greg Kallio and Arthur Turlak, the crew, including six certified sawyers, fanned out from the shelter to find downed trees. They cut them into manageable rounds, loaded them into trucks, and hauled them back to the shelter. There, the rest of the team split and stacked every piece until the woodpile reached the roofline.

The work didn’t stop there. The next day, a smaller crew headed out on the Peak View Snowshoe Trail to adjust the alignment, brush back vegetation, install more snow poles, and replace trail markers along the route.

So the next time you kick off your skis or snowshoes at the shelter and warm your hands by the stove, think of these amazing folks. Thank you, STA volunteers! Three Creeks Nordic Park is ready for snow!!

That’s a wrap! 🏁 STA volunteers staffed aid stations and tables for 8 race events on Sisters Country trails this summer!

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out to volunteer at our events this season. From aid stations and event support, these events simply wouldn’t happen without you.

Join us for an evening at Caldera!

On Tuesday, September 15, Sisters Trails Alliance is partnering with the US Forest Service, K Media Films & Timber Reel Productions, and Caldera for a special screening of Follow the Beaten Path, a documentary exploring the balance between non-motorized recreation and conservation in Central Oregon's National Forests. As more of us are drawn to the outdoors every year, that conversation matters more than ever.

The evening starts at 5:30 pm with a reception (light appetizers and drinks) at Caldera Campus, 31500 Blue Lake Drive, west of Suttle Lake. Celebrating its 30th year, Caldera has engaged over 15,000 youth from underserved communities through its creative arts programs, and we're grateful to be hosted there. An optional campus tour follows at 5:45 pm.

The hour-long film begins at 6:30 pm, followed by a Q&A with STA, Forest Service and other stakeholders.

Tickets are $15 and support our Summertime Fundraiser, helping us build the first major trail expansion in Sisters Country in 15 years, assess our trails for adaptive recreation, and keep 200 miles of trails maintained and accessible for everyone.

STA Sawyers, Jennie, Jeff, and Bruce used our reconditioned crosscut saw with its new handles to clear three downed trees - two from the Metolius-Windigo/Trail 99 section between Forest Road 1514 and 1514-880. Then they forded the knee-deep (and pretty cold!) Whychus Creek to clear a 28" diameter ponderosa across the Peterson Burn Horse Trail, near the south end of Forest Road 1505-700. The refurbished saw worked really well, all had a good time, and they finished cutting just before the heavier rain moved in. What a dedicated team!

Trails for All! It’s an exciting new project to assess over 200 miles of Sisters Country trails for adaptive recreation. These ratings will allow anyone, of any ability level, to evaluate our trails and decide which one is right for them.

A 20+ volunteer-powered assessment team began training this month. Just think - when this project is completed, Sisters Country trails will be one of the first fully-rated for accessible adventure trail systems in Oregon!

🔥The Akawa Butte Fire emergency closure order has reduced in size. The following recreation sites have reopened:
✅Indian Ford Campground
✅Monty Campground
✅Perry South Campground & Boat Launch
✅Black Butte Trailhead
✅Green Ridge Lookout

⚠The reduced closure will remain in place temporarily for public safety while firefighters assess the burn area and mitigate hazards. Several hazards including fire-weakened trees, rolling debris due to destabilized soil and hidden ash pits with lingering heat from burned-out stumps and roots can be found within recently burned areas.

During fire suppression operations, shaded fuel breaks were established along Forest Service Road (FSR) 11 and Indian Ford Road to prepare the roads as control lines ahead of the fire in case they were needed. A shaded fuel break is constructed by thinning trees, removing brush and pruning the branches of the remaining trees to reduce ladder fuels. The public can expect to see wider tree spacing, reduced ladder fuels and log decks along FSR 11 and Indian Ford Road. The log decks are not available for firewood at this time, and as a reminder chainsaw use is currently prohibited across the Deschutes National Forest because Stage 2 Public Use Restrictions are in effect.

Join us at Sisters Art Works on Fri, Aug. 7 for the 4th annual Hometown Hang, a FREE evening of live music and philanthropy, produced by SFF Presents and Citizens 4 Community! The event will feature performances by local Americana duo Skybound Blue and acclaimed Portland bluegrass band Never Come Down, along with a chance to connect with local nonprofit organizations (like STA and our partners from Deschutes Trails Coalition!) and learn more about the important work we’re doing in the community.

This free, family-friendly event is open to all ages. Come hungry and enjoy food from Barrio, Sen, and Bonta, along with alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Gates open at 5 pm, and the show starts at 6 pm. More info at SffPresents.org/Concert
