STA Sawyers, Jennie, Jeff, and Bruce used our reconditioned crosscut saw with its new handles to clear three downed trees - two from the Metolius-Windigo/Trail 99 section between Forest Road 1514 and 1514-880. Then they forded the knee-deep (and pretty cold!) Whychus Creek to clear a 28" diameter ponderosa across the Peterson Burn Horse Trail, near the south end of Forest Road 1505-700. The refurbished saw worked really well, all had a good time, and they finished cutting just before the heavier rain moved in. What a dedicated team!

Trails for All! It’s an exciting new project to assess over 200 miles of Sisters Country trails for adaptive recreation. These ratings will allow anyone, of any ability level, to evaluate our trails and decide which one is right for them.

A 20+ volunteer-powered assessment team began training this month. Just think - when this project is completed, Sisters Country trails will be one of the first fully-rated for accessible adventure trail systems in Oregon!

🔥The Akawa Butte Fire emergency closure order has reduced in size. The following recreation sites have reopened:
✅Indian Ford Campground
✅Monty Campground
✅Perry South Campground & Boat Launch
✅Black Butte Trailhead
✅Green Ridge Lookout

⚠The reduced closure will remain in place temporarily for public safety while firefighters assess the burn area and mitigate hazards. Several hazards including fire-weakened trees, rolling debris due to destabilized soil and hidden ash pits with lingering heat from burned-out stumps and roots can be found within recently burned areas.

During fire suppression operations, shaded fuel breaks were established along Forest Service Road (FSR) 11 and Indian Ford Road to prepare the roads as control lines ahead of the fire in case they were needed. A shaded fuel break is constructed by thinning trees, removing brush and pruning the branches of the remaining trees to reduce ladder fuels. The public can expect to see wider tree spacing, reduced ladder fuels and log decks along FSR 11 and Indian Ford Road. The log decks are not available for firewood at this time, and as a reminder chainsaw use is currently prohibited across the Deschutes National Forest because Stage 2 Public Use Restrictions are in effect.

Volunteers were busy today, rehabbing environmental damage caused by an unauthorized trail. Please stay on the trail.

Effective immediately, the Deschutes National Forest has expanded the temporary emergency closure for the Akawa Butte Fire.
The expanded emergency closure on the Sisters Ranger District is north of Forest Service Road (FSR) 2059, east of FSR 14 and south of the Metolius River. The area will be closed to the public due to hazards and hazardous conditions created as a result of the Akawa Butte Fire.
The following trails are temporarily closed:
⛔Sisters Tie Trail #4092
⛔Metolius Windigo Trail #99
⛔Black Butte Trail #4026
⛔Lower Black Butte Loop Trail #4093, #4093.1
⛔Green Ridge Trail #4025
The following developed recreation sites are temporarily closed:
⛔Monty Campground
⛔Perry South Campground
⛔Indian Ford Campground
⛔Green Ridge Lookout
All National Forest System Roads found within the area closure are closed. All perimeter roads are still open along the closure.

🌲 Ready to make Sisters Country trails accessible for EVERYONE? We need YOU on our Accessible Trails Assessment Team!

We're recruiting volunteers of all ability levels to help us assess the Peterson Ridge Trail system and City Connector trails for mobility devices and adaptive mountain bikes (aMTB).

Here's what's involved:
🗓️ August 6–7: Two-half day trainings with our accessibility specialist contractors • Day 1: Learn technical skills for assisting adaptive trail users + data collection (measurements, georeferencing, photos/video) • Day 2: Practice assessments on trail with adaptive riders

After training, you'll join small groups conducting trail assessments throughout the summer. The data you gather will directly shape trail modifications, accessibility ratings, and our action plan for Travel Oregon's Recreation Ready Program, putting us on track for a significant infrastructure grant in 2028!

This is your chance to turn "Trails for All" from a vision into reality. 💚
