Earlier this month, some of our members hosted a highly informative and well attended Hunting Dog 101 course at the Outdoor Education Center in Sioux Falls!

The first hour was packed with informative classroom sessions covering the basics of hunting dog training, breeds, and handling tips. The second hour moved outdoors for live dog demonstrations that brought the lessons to life—watching the dogs work was the highlight for everyone!

A big thank you to all the participants, instructors, and handlers who made the day such a success. Whether you’re new to hunting dogs or looking to sharpen your skills, events like this are a great way to learn from experienced folks in the NAVDHA community.

We will be hosting junior, senior, and master hunt tests at $65 per entry. Entries close midnight of May 18th.

Our judges include Mark Howard, Ken Loth, Brad Richardson and Thomas Hardage.

Details for WINTER OBEDIENCE-

Schedule & Location
Begins: 2/1/26
Duration: 6 weeks
Location: Armory Building at the W.H. Lyons Fairgrounds in Sioux Falls

Requirements
Must be currently paid member of Midwest Tri State NAVHDA (can pay online or at the first session)
$10 per dog per week
All dogs must be current on vaccinations including Bordetella; bring your vaccination records to the first class you attend
Dogs on leash at all times unless performing an off-leash exercise
Dogs may not act aggressively toward people or other dogs
You are responsible to clean up after your dog, inside and out

Equipment to bring
Standard buckle collar
6’ leash – leather is recommended
Choker or prong collar (prong collar preferred)
Treats and/or clicker if doing treat training
E-collar for off-leash work
Jeff will have prong collars available for purchase

Schedule
12:30-1:00 PM – Check-in and membership renewal
1:00-1:30 PM – Puppies up to 6 months with some wiggle room
1:30-2:00 PM – As defined by participants (Testing overview, New to NAVHDA, Intro to birds, Intro to tracking, etc.)
2:00-3:00 PM – Adult Dogs (6 months and older)
3:00-4:00 PM – Advanced Training Topics
As defined by participants (E-collar intro, Whoa training, Whoa bench, Force Fetch, Lining Drills, Tracking, How to load launchers (DT, Zinger Winger), Chain gang)
4:00-4:30 PM – Cleanup

At the last session on March 8 we will do the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) evaluation. This is voluntary for those who wish to participate.

WINTER OBEDIENCE SESSION PLANNED!

WHEN: BEGINS SUNDAY FEB 1
Lasting for 6 weeks

WHERE: WH LYONS FAIRGROUNDS ARMORY BUILDING IN SIOUX FALLS.

Registration for puppies 6 months or less starts at 12:30pm with training starting at 1pm. Dogs older than 6 months can register at 1:30 either training starting at 2pm. From 3 pm to 4pm we will cover advanced training topics as requested by participants. Cost is $10 per dog per session.
