We recently had lunch at Antonio's in Simsbury, and it was a great time.

Every community outing gives us a chance to practice skills that matter: ordering, budgeting, socializing, getting comfortable in a new space.

We welcomed State Senator Ryan Fazio for Governor to CREATE Independence yesterday, following his press conference in Simsbury. He reached out to learn more about who we are, our programs, and the issues facing individuals, families, and caregivers in our community.

We talked through access, our programs, and the funding and vocational challenges so many families face, especially as individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities reach certain ages and transitions in life. It was a meaningful opportunity to speak directly with someone in government about what our families experience every day.

We may not agree on every policy, but we believe in working with people across government to strengthen support and care for the individuals we serve.

Is your young adult making friends and memories outside the house? Here's what last month looked like at our day program in Connecticut.

A Fourth of July barbecue with red, white, and blue jello desserts from Speech group, grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, fireworks videos, and festive music all afternoon. A morning at Lyman Orchards picking our own peaches and blueberries. An afternoon outdoors at Jonathan's Dream park in West Hartford. A sweet treat at Rita's Italian Ice.

It looks like fun because it is. It's also a purposeful routine, built with small staff-to-client ratios and individualized support, so every outing does double duty: connection and growth.

What does recreation and leisure actually look like at CREATE Independence's day program in Connecticut?

Last month alone: YMCA workouts and basketball to keep our weeks active. A full glow party after finishing our space-themed creations, glow sticks and Just Dance included. A Disney-themed dance session. Two trips to the movies, Moana and Toy Story. And a Mario Kart relay that turned into one of the best team moments of the month.

It looks like fun because it is. But every activity here is built with a purpose, emotional regulation, social skills, confidence, wellness, woven into things people actually want to do. That's the difference a small, individualized program makes.

Something exciting is coming to Avon, CT!

Our workshop started as a space for individuals in our transitional program to build real skills through hands-on, creative work: motor skills, social skills, vocational skills. Now we're growing it into something bigger: a consignment shop.

Our individuals are already making some seriously cool stuff: 3D-printed chess sets, custom chess tables, up-cycled furniture, and hand-built pieces, all made right here as part of learning real vocational skills.

Soon, we'll open our doors to the Farmington Valley community as a full consignment shop. Have something you'd like to sell? You'll be able to rent space with us. Plus, an online store is coming too.

This is just the beginning, and we want you along for the ride. 👀

We're Hiring: 1:1 Transition Program Support Specialist

Are you a caring, patient professional who wants to make a real difference in a young person's life? CREATE Independence is looking for a dedicated 1:1 Support Specialist to join our Transition Program in Weatogue, CT!

We are seeking a caring and dedicated professional to provide individualized, 1:1 support for a participant in our Transition Program. This role is focused on helping the individual achieve their personal goals in employment readiness, community engagement, social development, and independent living. The ideal candidate will be patient, resourceful, and committed to building a positive, empowering relationship within a structured program setting.

What you'll do:
- Provide 1:1 support tailored to the participant's goals, interests, and learning style
- Coach job readiness, social, and daily living skills through hands-on activities
- Support meaningful participation in program activities and community outings
- Track progress and share updates with our team to ensure coordinated care
- Partner with staff, families, and vocational services every step of the way

What we're looking for:
- 1-2 years of experience with individuals with disabilities (school, transition program, or similar)
- Strong communication skills and the ability to adapt in real time
- Reliable transportation to accompany the participant to activities
- CPR/First Aid certified (or willing to obtain) and able to pass a background check
- Patience, empathy, and a genuine commitment to person-centered support
