Week 3 in Ecuador is designed for the interns to have a cultural immersion that not only strengthens their knowledge of Ecuador, but gives them the opportunity to collaborate on community development projects. The intern team worked together with the municipal social outreach center and over 60 women in charge of infant daycare to co-create a new workbook that integrates local foods to improve nutrition in the centers. This week, interns are diving into their community-based projects in Chimborazo Province.

Week 2: Last week, the internship theme transitioned from mobile medical outreach in the Amazon to hybrid hospital-based and community-based healthcare delivery in the Andean Highlands where they supported a group of surgeons from the USA. 24 children received corrective surgeries for strabismus and 255 children in four rural communities received glasses for long-distance vision.

The intern team is now in the middle of a trip to the Southern Ecuadorian cities of Cuenca and Loja. Stay tuned for more!

Last week, 6 interns from across the United States arrived for the first time in Ecuador to begin their 8-week internship immersion program. We spent a few days in the Andean highlands exploring Cotopaxi national park, then we went straight to the Amazon region to support our counterpart Fundación Internacional Buen Samaritano Paúl Martel "FIBUSPAM" for 2 days of medical outreach. Thanks to a generous donor and our organizational partners, our team was able to provide free medical attention to nearly 250 people who would normally never have local access to cervical cancer screening, general medicine, dentistry, and optometry. We are grateful to so many people that make this experience possible. Right now, our team is supporting a surgical team from the United States that is providing free strabismus surgeries. Stay tuned for a week 2 update!

PACH and FIBUSPAM are bringing two days of mobile medical care to Palora, Morona Santiago in the Ecuadorian Amazon. We are delivering general medicine, women’s health, vision care, and dental services to communities where these specialties are otherwise out of reach. A generous donor has already committed $2,000 toward this campaign, meaning we need just $2,650 more to make these two caravanas happen. Every dollar from here brings us closer to two full days of care for the people of Palora. Donate at https://bit.ly/3RlsVlG.
