May Town Council Update - what I heard about the state of the OFR East/West “project”

1) Recall the late cost estimate of $13M
2) A lot of activity over the past several months regarding permitting. That is ongoing.
3) The consultant, WMC, is moving forward to design with the above-grade retaining walls being “living walls”. No info on the maintenance requirement to keep these living. Reminder that the walls will be extensive - both above and below. All below grade topped with metal fencing.
4) Significant earth work expected to remove hillside and add long retaining wall on Thompson Rd curve.
5) Plan to reroute the brook under the western most bridge was rejected. New solution will increase the span and cost of a replacement bridge
6) Target to have 90% design by January 2027 and complete design by Spring 2027.
7) Town has applied for a $5M LOTCIP grant.

No discussion occurred regarding upcoming opportunities for community engagement/involvement. Would be helpful for interested folks to email or call the Town Manager to request sessions!!

Important: Next Town Council Meeting on May 7 @ 7pm

- Update on Old Farms Road East/West - this will be the first update since December ‘25, as permitting work has been ongoing, as well as design based on prelim design feedback from 4Q2024.

- Public Hearing: Discontinuance of Right of Way on abandoned portion of Old Farms Road

- Bike/Ped Improvements at Arch/Security Dr

Now that local elections are in the rear view, expect a lot of activity to push the E/W project through permitting and design and referendum. With existing scope, this is likely to be a $15M proposal… while trail access to Fisher Meadows (duplicative) moves forward along Country Club Road. Imagine this beautiful corridor reduced to a mundane thoroughfare 3x wider and lined with hundreds of yards of fences and retaining walls that you and your kids can’t see over.

Now is the time to be involved to Save Old Farms Road.
