Did you know Billy the Kid actually grew up right here in Silver City?

And during his outlaw days, his favorite horse was a compact Spanish-heritage horse he simply called "my bay mare."

Back in the 1870s, local vaqueros and outlaws didn’t want giant cavalry mounts. They relied on these smaller, incredibly smart Spanish lines because they were tough as nails, sure-footed on desert rocks, and could easily survive on native brush. Sheriff Pat Garrett even wrote that Billy’s mare was famous across the territory for her speed.

Our three Spanish mustang mares—Sandra Dune, Kahlua, and Little One—carry that exact same heritage. You can see it instantly in their compact builds, hardy stature, and sharp, alert features. They truly look like a living connection to the history of the old Southwest.

Sweet Mindy🌻

Mindy is easily one of the most approachable and sweet residents in the pasture. With her black coat, white socks, and matching black and white tail, she is always incredibly easy to spot out in the herd.

She is highly inquisitive, loves to be a part of things, and spends her time hanging out with the other horses—especially her buddy, Talah.

She usually comes right up to say hello and let you pet her nose whenever you walk out to visit.

Raider's Walkabout❤️

As one of our absolute most trusted and well-natured residents, we love letting 16-year-old Raider out for a little free-roaming time when the opportunity allows.

Raider is an Arabian gelding, and when he first arrived at the ranch, he was in a very fragile state. While he is still a special needs horse who requires a highly specialized diet and ongoing care, seeing how much confidence and strength he has regained over the months is incredible.

Today, he takes his absolute time cruising the layout, checking out the property, and playfully goading his fellow herd mates from the other side of the fence.

You might notice the herd shaking their heads and manes a bit more than usual when the weather turns crisp.

A sudden switch to cool October temperatures actually triggers a natural burst of energy and sensitivity in horses. It makes them highly alert, active, and a little extra responsive to the autumn wind.
