Do you know the plant life cycle? 1st graders at Central Elementary know! UGWA's education director, Mary Stone, demonstrates as students imitate and learn. These students are displaying flowers and fruit as part of our Earth Detectives program. Students collected seeds from last year's garden and are excited to plant them and watch the miracle unfold!

Seeds symbolize new hope and beginnings and are the source of life. These 1st graders at Central Elementary School were enthralled by the process of cleaning and sorting seeds from their campus garden as part of UGWA's Earth Detectives program. Artichoke, basil, and pepper were among the species planted last year and are now providing seeds for a spring garden! Thank you to the Central Elementary staff for collaborating with us on this magical project and to the Outdoor Equity Fund and the Whole Foods Market Foundation for funding.

Organizations submit over 1 million comments opposing the rescission of the Roadless Rule.

At least 1.6 million comments have been submitted in opposition to the rollback of the Roadless Area Conservation Rule, including those sent in response to the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) and the Forest Service’s Notice of Intent in 2025. The American public clearly wants our forests and public lands protected and stewarded for its benefit. People care about wildlife, water, trees, and being able to hike, run, climb, hunt, fish, watch birds, and more in our wild backcountry forests. Thank you to everyone who submitted comments and to the more than 100 organizations and coordinating partners that joined this effort.

The City of Rocks State Park is a geologic wonder right in our own backyard! UGWA's education team is pleased to share this magical place with the first graders at Harrison Schmitt Elementary School.

We taught students about the erosion process that formed the spires, and we created an activity that simulated the movement and flow of sand and mineral particles during erosion. We also introduced them to the flora and fauna of the Chihuahuan Desert by playing a food web game so young minds could grasp how each living creature plays a vital role in the ecosystem.

Thank you to Rebecca Martin for providing delicious snickerdoodle cookies with erosion-crack-like tops. We called them erosion cookies!

We hope this inspires YOU to visit this wondrous, peaceful place nearby. Monthly star shows are held, and secluded camping options are plentiful. New Mexico residents receive free admission from October through April.

Thank you to Friends of City of Rocks for helping to keep this serene ecosystem trash-free and hiking trails accessible!

What do you get when you bring together fabulous people, delicious food, foot-tapping music, and an inspiring environmental organization that has worked for 30 years to conserve the plants, animals, and soil in our watershed? A wondrous afternoon filled with smiles and camaraderie!

Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate 30 years of conservation work in our community and beyond. Thank you to the Silver City String Beans, the Corner Kitchen, Open Space Brewing, and The Seedboat Collective for making this a memorable celebration!

Every acre of unfragmented forest does quiet, continuous work — stabilizing the climate, preserving biodiversity, and holding watersheds together — work we cannot engineer or replace once it's gone.

The Roadless Rule keeps our wildland ecosystems intact and sustains critical habitat for threatened species. These forests protect drinking water for American communities and are among the last functioning buffers against climate change.
