Ecologists Without Borders (EcoWB) We are driven by a dedicated network of volunteer ecology experts.

We partner with communities worldwide hit hardest by environmental crises, providing the technical skills and resources needed to protect the ecosystems their lives depend on. The EcoWB expert network comprises a multi-national cadre of biologists, foresters, ecologists, water resource engineers, hydrologists, planners, GIS professionals, and facilitators/ negotiators with experience in natural resource research and management. Our primary focus is on developing and transitional counยญtries, where natural resources are depleted and ecological processes disrupted to the point that human welfare is adversely affected.

At EcoWB, our strength is our people. From wildlife researchers to GIS specialists, we are all ecologists at heart, bringing diverse perspectives to the partners we support.๐ŸŒ

Meet Dr. Lucรญa Corral โ€“ our very first feature in our new Our Eco-System series spotlighting the brilliant minds driving our mission! ๐Ÿฆœโœจ

Growing up across Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Mexico, Lucรญa developed a lifelong fascination with nature that guided a career spanning maned wolves in Brazil, swift foxes in the US, and conservation across Latin America.

Today, she is providing crucial support to existing initiatives led by our partner, the Macaw Recovery Network, to protect Costa Rica's iconic Great Green and Scarlet macaws.

"Iโ€™m bringing to this work the strong belief that the best conservation solutions are built together with the people who know and care for their landscapes every day," Lucรญa says.

By recruiting skilled volunteers for MRN's activities in Costa Rica โ€“ spanning forest restoration to sustainable community enterprises โ€“ Lucรญa is helping build a lasting foundation of local capacity. She also helps apply frameworks like the Conservation Standards to strengthen their ongoing mission.

We are so grateful for Lucรญa's passion and expertise ๐Ÿ’š

Stay tuned for more brilliant minds in our Our Eco-System series, and join us in thanking her in the comments below! ๐Ÿ‘‡

Last week, we proudly announced Dune Ives as our new Executive Director๐ŸŒฟโœจ

With over 25 years of experience turning ambitious environmental ideas into action โ€“ from leading the Green Sports Alliance and NextWave Plastics to pioneering impact investment funds โ€“ she is uniquely equipped to lead our global community into its next chapter!

What drew her to EcoWB? What has she discovered during her first few months on the job? And where does she see us a year from now?

We sat down with Dune for an inspiring conversation about the power of our volunteers, the needs of the communities we serve, and why there is a place for everyone in this mission.

Are you already part of the EcoWB volunteer network? Do you have 15 minutes between now and October 19th?

Yes to both?

โ€œThatโ€™s music to our ears!โ€ Or, as some of our volunteers who speak more than 65 languages might sayโ€ฆ

โ€œMรบsica para mis oรญdosโ€
โ€œC'est de la musique ร  mes oreillesโ€
โ€œDas ist Musik in meinen Ohrenโ€
โ€œMusica per le mie orecchieโ€
โ€œMรบsica para os meus ouvidosโ€

Whichever language you speak, we want to hear from you!

๐Ÿ“ฃ Help inform our future strategy through this survey where we explore:
โ†’ What it is like to be an EcoWB volunteer and how we can make your experience more rewarding.
โ†’ Additional resources that might be the most useful to you.
โ†’ The advice you might give to other active or future volunteers.

We want to hear it all!

Act fast - surveys completed by October 19th will be included in our annual strategic review.

Take the survey below!

When looking at how we tackle global environmental challenges, one truth stands out: real, lasting change is powered by people. โœจ

As we mark the International Year of the Volunteer, itโ€™s a powerful reminder that grassroots energy and dedicated hands move mountains. A recent United Nations Volunteers report highlights just how vital volunteer-driven action is in shaping resilient communities worldwide.

At EcoWB, this principle guides our entire approach. Our network of volunteers collaborates directly with local communities, sharing technical knowledge and supporting hashtag efforts where it matters most.

And, we do this without cost to the communities leading the efforts.

Why? Because we have always believed that access to technical knowledge and support should be freely available and accessible to everyone - not just to those who have the means or a willing funder.

When you support volunteer-powered science and action, you aren't just funding a project; you are investing in a global community dedicated to protecting our planet๐ŸŒ

With extreme weather on the rise and institutional funding shifting away from environmental protection, the big question in conservation right now is: Where can we make the biggest difference?

Research shows the answer is clear. As highlighted in recent findings by Trish Abalo and Emily Doebler, Community-Led Movements are Driving Climate Action. When local populations are equipped to lead, lasting restoration follows.

That is exactly why EcoWB exists. We stand with communities taking action to address their environmental challenges.

Rather than working in isolation, we partner directly with local communities hit hardest by climate crises, connecting them with the skills, knowledge, and resources they need to restore their own ecosystems.

Stay tuned later this week as Dune shares more about what drew her to our mission, the incredible legacy of our volunteer-led roots, and her vision for the future.

Weโ€™re looking forward to the leaps we will take with Dune at the helm of our organization!

Behind every bite of food is an ecosystem held together by pollinators. ๐ŸŒ

To an ecologist, bees are a keystone species: a species that holds an entire habitat together.

The numbers speak for themselves:
๐ŸŽ Human Nutrition: 1/3 of the food we eat depends directly on pollinators.
๐ŸŒฑ Wild Biodiversity: Over 75% of wild flowering plants rely on them to reproduce, sustaining the rest of the food web.

From habitat loss to pesticide use, these critical insects are facing unprecedented pressures. Protecting them is an ecological necessity.

This World Bee Day, we can all contribute to ecosystem resilience by planting native flora and skipping the pesticides. ๐ŸŒป

โœ… Fisheries and wetland restoration in Mexico, El Salvador, and Costa Rica.
โœ… A record-breaking year for our volunteer network!

As we head into 2026, we are expanding our reach and responding to new calls for support from communities in need.
