Wildlife trafficking isn’t just about ivory or big cats. It’s also driven by demand for “exotic pets” hiding in plain sight.

Between 2017 and 2023, researchers identified 34 wildlife seizures involving animals trafficked from Latin America to Europe, totaling 2,495 animals across 69 species. An estimated 94% of the seized animals were alive, revealing just how heavily the exotic pet trade depends on live animal trafficking.

Amphibians made up the majority of seized animals, including species like poison dart frogs from Colombia and Panama. Researchers also found that many trafficked species weren’t protected under international trade agreements like CITES, creating legal loopholes traffickers can exploit.

The report warns that Europe has become a major destination for trafficked wildlife from Latin America, fueled by demand for rare and endemic species in the pet trade.

Who protects farmed animals at slaughter? For 99% of them, no one.

Chickens, turkeys, and fish make up the vast majority of animals killed for food in the U.S., but they’re excluded from the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act.

That means millions of animals raised for food have no legal protections when they’re killed.

Most of the ocean’s fish populations are already under pressure.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, nearly all assessed fish stocks are now either fully exploited or overfished, leaving very little margin for recovery or growth.

That doesn’t just impact marine ecosystems. It affects biodiversity, food systems, and the long-term resilience of ocean life.

Understanding the scale of this issue is critical to making more informed, sustainable choices about how we interact with the ocean.
