Schools Must Be Part of Uganda’s Malaria Elimination Journey
As part of the ongoing hashtag hashtag training of Data and Entomology Officers, the Pilgrim Africa team was privileged to learn from Dr Jane Nabakooza, - Ministry of Health- Uganda – National Malaria Control Division (NMCD), during her session on Malaria Prevention, Surveillance & Case Management in Schools.
Dr Nabakoza connected the work of the SENSE Study to Uganda’s broader malaria elimination agenda, highlighting the country’s ambition to interrupt indigenous malaria transmission by 2035 and the importance of strengthening the capacity of key actors to deliver quality, evidence-based malaria services.
Her presentation also reinforced why school-age children and schools matter in malaria control. In FY 2025/26, children aged 5–19 years accounted for 3,965,632 uncomplicated malaria cases — 38.6% of all uncomplicated malaria cases nationally.
The presentation emphasized that schools are therefore not only places of learning, but important platforms for malaria prevention, surveillance, early diagnosis, case management and response.
For the SENSE Study team, these insights further strengthen our commitment to generating quality evidence that can contribute to better malaria prevention and control among learners in boarding schools.
