"Folklore is the boiled-down juice of human living."
-Zora Neale Hurston, "Folklore and Music"*

August 22 is International Folklore Day. The date marks the first recorded use of the word "folklore" when it appeared in a British magazine.

What is folklore to you? Is it stories, myth, and fables? Customs, foods, and intangible culture? Music, dance, and artistic practices?

*Written by Hurston in 1939 but not published until 1991 in Frontiers: A Journal of Women's Studies

"Kai and Mommy took the bus from West Seattle to the downtown The Seattle Public Library to make an adventure out of getting his first library card! Everyone was nice to him giving him stickers and including him in the Spanish-hour play. The first book he checked out was Llama Llama Home with Mama." -Loraine

It's official! King County results for the August 4 election have been certified, and Proposition 1, which replaces the existing Library Levy, passed with over 75% of the vote!

The voters of Seattle spoke loud and clear: They want The Library and its people, programs, materials, and resources to be funded and supported from 2027–2033.

The Friends of The SPL are so grateful for the all the community members, donors, elected officials, endorsers, advocates who volunteered tirelessly to get the vote out and helped Prop. 1 succeed. THANK YOU!

😎The Friends have fun!

Just reminiscing about our board member social hour during The Seattle Public Library Foundation's super-fun Books and Brews event last month. The beers were cold, the sun was hot, and the chat about library advocacy and summer reading was on fire. 🔥
