As we celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day and National Co-op Month, we’re reminded that the work of creating a more equitable and regenerative economy begins with how we relate to one another and to the living world that sustains us.

We celebrate the wisdom of cooperation across generations—from the Haudenosaunee Confederacy’s enduring legacy of peace, regeneration, and collective governance to the power of today’s cooperatives to meet this moment with practical wisdom, shared responsibility, and deep roots in place.

Long before Schenectady became the Electric City, this “place beyond the pines” was part of a regional agroforestry economy shaped by relationships among people, forests, rivers, and all the beings that sustain life, guided by the Great Law of Peace.

Here at the Electric City Community Grocery, we know that peace, wellbeing, and cooperation are all about practice, and taking the next step together.

Last week, we enjoyed some great strides! We welcomed Interim General Manager Garland McQueen, and Board President Eric Johnson and fellow member-owners have been walking with him each morning to share our beautiful city and get to know one another.

Walking along the Mohawk River, which carries a deep history of connection to the Haudenosaunee peoples and their enduring traditions of cooperation, peace, and responsibility to the generations to come, we’re reminded that building something nourishing takes time, connection, and care—and that a strong foundation is how we make good things possible.

Happy Co-op Month!

This October, we are joining over 65,000 co-operatives and credit unions across the United States in celebrating Co-op Month!

A recent survey by the Neighboring Food Co-op Association found that there are more than 65 food co-ops in New England and New York State. Taken together, these grocery stores are jointly owned by about 300,000 members, generate estimated annual revenue of $668 million, and employ more than 3,300 people. They’re also engines of our regional economy, reporting that an average of 30% of their sales are supplied by local producers.

And because they are governed by the people who use them to meet their needs, co-operatives are rooted in their communities, empowering them to create positive change.

We're so excited that the 2026 New York Cooperative Summit will be held in downtown Schenectady at Armory Studios NY and cooperators from across the state will get a chance to see what we love about Schenectady!

The New York Cooperative Summit brings together people and organizations working to build a stronger cooperative economy across the state: worker cooperatives, food cooperatives, credit unions, housing cooperatives, community land and real estate projects, cooperative developers, technical assistance providers, funders, organizers, researchers, educators, and allied institutions.

The Summit is a place to connect across sectors, share practical tools, learn from one another, and build relationships that can carry the work forward beyond a single event. The goal is to strengthen the relationships, infrastructure, and shared strategy needed to grow democratic ownership and community-rooted economic power across New York.
