Why do insects matter? Because they rule the world! 🐜

These marvels of evolution were the first in flight and dominated the skies for millions of years. Insects appear in a staggering array of shapes and sizes and life spans. Insects were first to engage in manufacturing, animal husbandry and farming.

332 species identified. One year. One record-breaking adventure. 🐦

Join local authors and birding enthusiasts Stacey Huth and Noah Gibb as they share the incredible story behind Maine's newest Big Year birding record. Together, they identified 332 bird species across the state in 2025, setting a new Maine record and documenting their journey in An Experiment in Birding.

Books will be available for purchase and signing following the presentation. 📖

You don’t have to leave Scarborough to enjoy some seriously beautiful fall color. 🍂

In one of our past issues, we rounded up three local trails worth exploring when the leaves turn:

🌳 Fuller Farm — 2.9 miles, with plenty of shorter options. Rolling fields, birds, and a mix of oak, beech, and maple trees make it a classic autumn destination.

🍁 Eastern Trail — 3 miles and easy. The Pine Point Road access offers beautiful views across the Scarborough Marsh, where fall hardwoods create a ribbon of red and orange beside the yellow marsh grass.

🌾 Pleasant Hill Preserve — 1.5 miles and easy, with several loop trails through fields, woods, and wetlands. The star of the show is a 200-year-old American elm that turns golden yellow at peak foliage.

Bonus: Pleasant Hill’s ¼-mile Eleanor’s Trail is universally accessible for wheelchairs, walkers, and other assistive devices.

And because fall also means tick season, the original guide recommends staying in the center of trails, using EPA-approved repellent, tucking pants into socks, and doing a full-body tick check when you get home.

This Thursday (September 10th) join Maine Outdoor Film Festival (MOFF) and Scarborough Land Trust (SLT) at Memorial Park in Scarborough. We will be showcasing six films focused on the environment, including two films on the Saltmarsh Sparrow.
