Propeller Club - Port of Savannah The Club is dedicated to the enhancement and well-being of all interests of the maritime community both on a national and international basis.

The purpose of the Propeller Club of the United States, Port of Savannah, shall be to support the Americana Merchant Marine—to aid in the development of needed river/harbor improvements, and encourage maritime, education, and port-related industries. The Savannah maritime community is a diverse and active group of shippers, shipping lines, surveyors, agents, insurers, tug and barge operators, port

facilities, pilots, bankers, educators, lawyers, warehouse operators, and all the associations that contribute to the operations of the port and its efficiency, safety, and security. The Propeller Club of the United States is a non-profit organization whose membership represent every aspect of the maritime industry and reside throughout the United States and overseas.

The next Propeller Club, Port of Savannah members' meeting will be held on Thursday, April 9th. We are happy to announce that Gregg Baumann will be our guest speaker. The topic: “M/V Dali bridge allision in Baltimore: A behind-the-scenes look at the ships’ salvage."

Gregg Baumann is a native of Vestal, NY. He graduated from Clarkson University with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. Following graduation, he joined the US Navy through the Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI. Baumann first served as a shipboard engineering officer at sea. After multiple deployments, he transitioned ashore, where he worked in new ship construction and then specialized in diving & salvage engineering. During his career, he completed the US Navy’s dive school and earned a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. He finished up his career as the US Navy’s Supervisor of Diving & Salvage, Director of Ocean Engineering. While in this role, he was involved in and led many national and international maritime salvage disasters. He has been featured as a subject-matter expert on “60 Minutes,” CNN, CBS News, the Discovery Channel, the History Channel, and the Maritime Reporter and Maritime Technology magazines. Additionally, he has authored papers for the American Society of Naval Engineers Journal. After a 29-year career in the military and a retirement at the rank of Captain, he joined Resolve Marine in Ft Lauderdale, FL, as their Government Programs Manager in January 2023. He is based out of Resolve Marine’s Washington DC area office.

Chairman DiBella provided the club with an informative update on the various ways her department facilitates and safeguards American shipping lanes globally. We appreciate the time you took to join us in Savannah today and we all thoroughly enjoyed your presentation.

The next members’ meeting will be on Thursday, February 12. We are happy to announce that our guest speaker is Dr. T. Kurt Knoerl. He is an Associate Professor of History at Georgia Southern University's Savannah campus, where he teaches maritime history, maritime archaeology, and public and digital history. He earned his master’s degree in maritime history and underwater archaeology from East Carolina University and his Ph.D. in history from George Mason University. His research explores Savannah’s maritime cultural landscape. His most recent fieldwork examines Savannah's Civil War landscape. He is also the founder and Director of the online nonprofit Museum of Underwater Archaeology, a sitting member of the Chatham County Historic Preservation Commission, and a member of the Ossabaw Island Foundation Board of Trustees.
