Deep Center

Deep Center Deep Center is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that provides free, fun, and rigorous writing workshops for public school students in Savannah, Georgia.

Deep Center uses writing, art, and culture to fuel the creative fires of Savannah’s young people, helping them connect their learning to their lives, their lives to their communities, and their actions to change. We connect kids with a thriving community of writing mentors—local authors, poets, and journalists—to help them share their stories. Deep Center takes an in-depth approach to literacy by

challenging young people to engage with language and their stories through writing, reading, and performance. We help them write and express themselves with skill, confidence, and courage, and we showcase their best work through publication and in live venues. Deep also strives to raise the voices of diverse young people in our community to ensure their perspectives, stories, and aesthetics are part of our rich cultural fabric, and to afford them the opportunity to engage in critical debates and the development of new cultural forms and movements.

At our last Barbershop Talk, we explored alternative pathways to long-term success for justice impacted people.

Securing stable employment is the bedrock of a successful re-entry. But too often, the search for that job feels more like pulling on locked doors.

We talked about those challenges then let some community partners from Step Up Savannah and Local 188 offer apprenticeship programs as a potential solution.

If you want to engage in meaningful conversation centered on the justice-impacted experience, join us for our next Barbershop Talk on July 1st! just email [email protected] for details.

Join Deep, St. Phillip AME Church, and the Justice Reform Partnership Southeast for a Re-Entry Reform Town Hall on Tuesday, July 14th.

At this event, multiple justice-impacted speakers will share their experiences navigating barriers to employment, housing, and transportation and what we as a community can do to reduce those roadblocks.

This is also a space for local and state decisionmakers, community members, and the business community among others, to engage in conversation and explore solutions. There will also be free refreshments and networking opportunities for all!
