Deep Center

Deep Center Deep Center is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that provides free, fun, and rigorous writing workshops for public school students in Savannah, Georgia.

Deep Center uses writing, art, and culture to fuel the creative fires of Savannah’s young people, helping them connect their learning to their lives, their lives to their communities, and their actions to change. We connect kids with a thriving community of writing mentors—local authors, poets, and journalists—to help them share their stories. Deep Center takes an in-depth approach to literacy by

challenging young people to engage with language and their stories through writing, reading, and performance. We help them write and express themselves with skill, confidence, and courage, and we showcase their best work through publication and in live venues. Deep also strives to raise the voices of diverse young people in our community to ensure their perspectives, stories, and aesthetics are part of our rich cultural fabric, and to afford them the opportunity to engage in critical debates and the development of new cultural forms and movements.

Returning home should mean a real opportunity to rebuild. Still, for many people across Coastal Georgia, barriers to housing, employment, transportation, professional licensing, and access to essential resources continue long after incarceration ends.

Building on the Reentry Town Hall held in Savannah this July, this Talk Justice Tuesday continues the conversation about reentry across the region, what people are experiencing, where gaps remain, and what meaningful reform can look like.

Hosted by Deep Center and the Justice Reform Partnership Southeast Georgia Chapter, this virtual conversation will be led by directly impacted leaders and advocates working across the region. Together, they’ll explore the challenges communities are facing, how local leaders and organizations are responding, and the policy and community-driven solutions needed to create stronger pathways home.

We’re excited to kick off another round of Deep Residencies in Savannah classrooms! Over 6–8 weeks, Deep Teaching Artists partner with classroom teachers to strengthen literacy, engagement, and student voice through creative writing, discussion, and student-centered learning.

Kalima is the Director of Youth Literacy Programs, and she created Deep Residencies, bringing creative writing directly into schools and partnering with educators to support student learning. Her innovation has allowed Deep to expand even further, and we are so grateful to have her on board!

Know a Savannah young person, ages 14–18, who has questions, ideas, or something to say about what it’s like to be a young person in school and in their community? They may be a perfect fit for our Action Research Team (ART)

ART members work together to explore issues affecting young people, research the questions they care about, and turn their experiences and ideas into creative projects and action. Members build skills, confidence, and connections along the way. And we are looking for new members for our 2025-26 team!
