Thank you so much to everyone who joined us at ARTS Southeast on Saturday for our Panel Discussion surrounding the work and life of celebrated Savannah artist, Preston Orr — and a special thank you to Mary Hartman, Marcus Kenney, Debora Oden, and Lily Kate Conneff for sharing their time and memories with us! It was an incredible turnout, and we loved the stories shared about Preston Orr and the Savannah art scene in the 90s.

In Conjunction with

Preston James Orr (1968–2022) was born in Columbia, South Carolina and studied fine art at the College of Charleston before eventually settling in Savannah. Here, he became part of a close-knit community of artists, and was known for his love of kayaking and the outdoors. After Orr’s passing in 2022, his artwork was entrusted to the care of artist and friend, Mary Hartman.

Orr’s work expresses something ineffable – errant marks resemble fragments of text, like ancient graffiti on cave walls. Laid bare in resin, Preston elevated materials that even the most adventurous artists overlook or discard: toilet paper, caviar, crack lighters from beneath the floorboards of an abandoned house.⁠ ⁠

Our Silent Auction Fundraiser for the Ossabaw Island Residency has been EXTENDED! Place bids for these fabulous items now through Monday, May 25th, at 8PM using the link in our bio.

Your support will go directly towards costs associated with the first residency cohort, including: Private housing on Ossabaw Island, all meals during the residency period, and transportation from Savannah to and from the island.

Beginning this fall, two cohorts of artists will be selected to spend focused time on Ossabaw, Georgia’s third-largest barrier island. Just south of Savannah, Georgia, and accessible only by boat, Ossabaw features 26,000 acres of undeveloped maritime forest, tidal wetlands, and Atlantic shoreline. It is protected by the State of Georgia as a heritage preserve to be used for natural, scientific, and cultural study. The Ossabaw Island Residency both advances ARTS Southeast’s commitment to deep creative inquiry by providing artists time and space on Ossabaw and continues the island’s tradition of multidisciplinary study rooted in nature, culture, and reflection first established in 1961 by Eleanor Torrey West and Clifford B. West.

The residency is intended for artists’ ideas to emerge and take shape, free from urban distractions. It is open to emerging, mid-career, and established artists across disciplines who are encouraged to pursue self-directed work shaped by solitude, a sense of place, and the pace of natural rhythms.

Join ARTS Southeast and IMPACT Arts + Culture Magazine TOMORROW at Laney Contemporary for a special evening celebrating the release of IMPACT Vol. 5 No. 1, our Ossabaw-centered issue exploring land, memory, ecology, artistic inheritance, and the cultural history of Georgia’s barrier islands. .magazine.sav

V5N1 features four collectible covers by:

The issue includes contributions and conversations with artists, writers, and curators including Beryl Gilothwest, Melissa Messina, Erin Dunn, Allison Janae Hamilton, Mimi Plumb, Gregory J. Harris, Le’Andra LeSeur, Trelani Michelle, Lisa Jaye Young, Josh Aronson, Rachel Waldrop, and others.

The evening will also serve as a fundraiser for the Ossabaw Island Residency, a new ARTS Southeast program launching this October. Rooted in the legacy of the historic Ossabaw Island Project, the residency will bring artists to Ossabaw for a week of retreat, research, reflection, and place-based creative exploration.

Celebrate with hors d’oeuvres by Sixby, drinks by Savoy Society, and music by Ryan Madson

In addition to the Ossabaw-centered issue of IMPACT, there are plenty of opportunities to support the launch of the Ossabaw Island Residency including a silent auction, with proceeds supporting the program.

On display at Laney Contemporary: “Jack Leigh & Parker Stewart: In Place,” a photography exhibition pairing two artists whose work is deeply connected to Savannah, the Georgia coast, and Ossabaw. On view thru Aug 1

Proceeds and contributions from the evening will support artist residents’ travel, lodging, meals, transportation, and logistical costs required to bring artists to Ossabaw Island for the inaugural OIR session.

ARTS Southeast is pleased to present “Figure/Ground,” on display in the Supporter Gallery May 21 — October 17, 2026

The human figure has been a subject for artists for thousands of years, grounding us in who we are individually and collectively. From ancient cave paintings to contemporary questions of identity, authorship and representation, documenting ourselves and capturing the likenesses of others is deeply human. For this exhibition, artists were invited to submit figurative work in any medium. Whether traditional or alternative media, realism or abstraction, each work featured contemplates the human form.
