Right after the runoff elections, we're heading back to the capitol and as the government reconvenes, MESE will go right back to advocating for our communities. A top priority is redistricting. After Governor Kemp passed HB369 into law, requiring "nonpartisan elections" for several local offices in the metro Atlanta area, we're on alert for even more attempts at voter suppression. As session resumes June 17, public comment will be open and we encourage you to join in!

Did you know the elections aren't over? In Georgia law, candidates must secure a majority of votes - passing the 50% threshold - in order to be elected. When they don't, the race goes to a runoff.

This year, runoffs will be held June 16, with at least one week of early voting. Locally, we're keeping an eye on the 1st congressional district where a lot of MESE community lives. We know voter fatigue is real, but several races have gone to a runoff, so be sure to hit the polls once more so our communities are represented across the state!

The Trump administration's latest immigration policy has sowed confusion, as it states immigrants who wish to get a green card need to leave the U.S. and apply from their home countries. For over half a century, foreign nationals with legal status have been able to apply for and complete the entire process for permanent residence in the U.S. — including individuals married to U.S. citizens, holders of work and student visas, and refugees and political asylum seekers. If you or your loved ones are impacted by this new policy, reach out to MESE and attend our legal clinic ( (912) 429-7951).

Here’s a 📸 snapshot on what MESE has been up to the first few weeks of May:

🌹We rallied for immigrant workers on May 1st, International Worker’s Day with our coalition of community partners in Forsyth Park.

🎉We celebrated Día de los Niños and threw two community parties with toys, food and resources for families in Savannah and Waycross.

🌸We hosted a community-wide and multigenerational Mother’s Day event to celebrate immigrant mothers who devote their time, their energy, and their health to raise their families here. At a time when immigrant mothers are being violently separated from their families, we wanted to honor these powerful women.

We set a new record for early turnout in Georgia’s primary elections – over 1 million people turned out because our communities know that we deserve better. Our team at MESE has been on the ground turning out the vote and ensuring people are exercising their right to vote at the polls, but we know civic engagement doesn’t stop at the ballot box!

Everyday, our team of volunteers makes our communities better by helping us distribute thousands of pounds of food to immigrant families, helping reunite people released from detention with their families, tabling at community events so people get the information they need, and much more.

If you want to build a Coastal Georgia where everyone can thrive, sign up to volunteer! bit.ly/VolunteerWithMESE

Families lost everything in the major wildfires that burned uncontrollably through hundreds of homes and over 50,000 acres here in Georgia. People saw their homes and all their belongings turn into ash and today the fires are only 90% contained.

Everyone impacted should have access to governmental support to help them recover from this climate disaster, but immigrant families are afraid to apply for FEMA support since it’s under DHS. With the potential threat of FEMA sharing information with ICE, people are now forced to choose between accessing funds that could help them recover from the fires or putting themselves and their families at risk for detention and deportation.

This month, MESE distributed almost 9,900 pounds of food and other necessities (including 1,100 rolls of toilet paper) to 268 farm workers and their families impacted by the wildfires.

Memorial Day rings hollow for the thousands of immigrant veterans who served the United States, risked their lives, followed orders and were deported afterwards. As many as 10,000 service members have been deported.

Today, more than 40,000 immigrants serve in the U.S. military and about 115,000 immigrant veterans live in the U.S.

Godfrey Wade, an Army veteran who has lived in the country for over 50 years, spent five months at Stewart detention center here in Georgia before DHS deported him to Jamaica over a traffic citation. "Thank you for serving my country" means nothing when the U.S. is deporting the people who served it.

Julio Torres, a US Marine Corps veteran who served in Iraq, has suffered from PTSD, drug addiction, and a related criminal charge. Mr Torres, born in Mexico and having migrated legally to the US at five, holds a green card and a distinguished US military record.

Despite this, he was detained by immigration authorities

“It breaks my heart that I fought for this nation to raise my children in this nation, and now I have to pull my children out of this nation if I get deported. Then what did I fight for?”

This Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month we’re thinking of some of Georgia’s earliest Asian residents. Many of them were Chinese laborers who were employed after the abolition of slavery, resulting in a labor shortage. After the Civil War, wealthy white plantation owners needed a cheap labor source so they hired East and South Asian indentured workers in the same way the British and Spanish empires modeled throughout years of harvesting sugarcane in the Caribbean. Even as Asian immigrants filled the void and enabled the economy to grow, they were viewed with suspicion and white Americans saw them as stealing their American jobs. This early nativism, xenophobia, and racism is all too familiar today. Just as our histories and present are interconnected, our struggles and the future we’re fighting for are interconnected.
