Memorial Day rings hollow for the thousands of immigrant veterans who served the United States, risked their lives, followed orders and were deported afterwards. As many as 10,000 service members have been deported.
Today, more than 40,000 immigrants serve in the U.S. military and about 115,000 immigrant veterans live in the U.S.
Godfrey Wade, an Army veteran who has lived in the country for over 50 years, spent five months at Stewart detention center here in Georgia before DHS deported him to Jamaica over a traffic citation. "Thank you for serving my country" means nothing when the U.S. is deporting the people who served it.
Julio Torres, a US Marine Corps veteran who served in Iraq, has suffered from PTSD, drug addiction, and a related criminal charge. Mr Torres, born in Mexico and having migrated legally to the US at five, holds a green card and a distinguished US military record.
Despite this, he was detained by immigration authorities
