Rooted in history. Grounded in community. Guided by remembrance. ✨

Today, we gathered at the Historic Harrington School on St. Simons Island as part of the 223rd Igbo Landing Commemoration Weekend — honoring the stories, resilience, and cultural legacy that continue to shape this sacred place.

From elders to youth, scholars to first-time visitors, every person here became part of a living memory rooted in truth, reflection, and connection.

This is more than a weekend gathering.
It is a return. 🌿

In 1803, a group of Igbo men, women, and children were stolen from their homeland, chained aboard a slave ship, and brought to the shores of St. Simons Island, Georgia.

But when they arrived at Dunbar Creek, something powerful happened.

They resisted.

Rather than live in bo***ge, they chose freedom on their own terms. Linked together in chains, they walked into the waters together chanting:

“The water brought us here. The water will take us away.”

That act of resistance became one of the most powerful stories of spiritual freedom and ancestral courage in American history.

Igbo Landing is not just a historical site.
It is sacred ground.

For generations, the story has been carried through the Gullah Geechee community as a reminder that even in the face of unimaginable oppression, the human spirit cannot be enslaved.

This May, we gather again for the 223rd Igbo Landing Commemoration to honor those ancestors, preserve this land, and continue telling the story the world tried to erase.

If you’re in Savannah, Brunswick, Beaufort, Jacksonville, St. Simons Island — or traveling in from anywhere across the country — we would love to welcome you.

Come stand with us where history, memory, and legacy meet. 🌊

✨ Another powerful moment in the global Igbo story.

On June 12, Governor Josh Stein officially proclaimed June 14, 2025, as ‘Igbo Day’ in North Carolina, honoring over 50 years of Igbo contributions to the state’s social, civic, and economic life.

From medicine to public service, education to entrepreneurship — the Igbo community has not only thrived but created lasting impact across generations.

This proclamation uplifts a vision we share: one rooted in heritage, unity, and cultural pride. 🌍🕊️

North Carolina now joins Minnesota in recognizing the strength, resilience, and brilliance of the Igbo people.

We honor this legacy. We are this legacy.

Big love to Sophia and Tarik, two brilliant minds journeying with us this weekend. 🎓📽️

Tarik, a Film and Visual Studies doctoral student at Harvard University and a member of the Sensory Ethnography Lab, and Sophia, a second-year PhD student in Performance Studies at UCLA.

Their presence, questions, and care reminded us that the story doesn’t end—it evolves. And it’s in good hands. ✊🏾📚🎥

We see you. We appreciate you. We’re rooting for the impact your work will have for generations to come. 💫
