A big thank-you to the wonderful students from St. Vincent’s Academy, who volunteered at Senior Citizens, Inc. today!

These amazing students rolled up their sleeves and helped package bags of pet food for our Pet Food Program, which helps older adults keep their beloved pets fed and happy. We’re grateful for the enthusiasm and kindness they brought to their work and their commitment to giving back to our community.

Thank you, St. Vincent's Academy, for helping us care for our older homebound neighbors and the furry friends who mean so much to them!

A dementia diagnosis can feel like a lot to take in—for the person diagnosed and for the people who love them. Sometimes it helps just to talk with others who understand.

That’s why Senior Citizens Inc. and the Alzheimer’s Association are starting an ongoing support group for people living with early-stage dementia and their care partners. Each meeting will include time together, followed by separate breakout groups so everyone has a chance to talk openly, ask questions and share experiences.

The first meeting is Monday, September 21—World Alzheimer’s Day—at Senior Citizens Inc.

Registration is required. Learn more at:

Imagine hearing the Declaration of Independence not as history—but as breaking news.

In 1776, no one knew how the story would end.

What transformed 13 very different colonies from subjects of the British Crown into a nation willing to stake its future on independence?

Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Edward J. Larson takes us back to that extraordinary year in Why 1776 Matters.

"...I was there on that day and at that time because I am a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. That's what allowed me to save the day."

Matt thought he was delivering lunch. Instead, he saved Patricia's life. When he arrived at her home, it was quickly filling with smoke. He called 911, led her to safety and helped stop the fire from spreading until first responders arrived. This is why Meals on Wheels is so much more than a meal; it's a lifeline. Every delivery is also a wellness check that can uncover emergencies that no one else is there to see.

Today, thousands of seniors are waiting for Meals on Wheels. Protecting and increasing federal funding means more than just delivering meals—it means giving more older adults a lifeline. Help us tell Congress to protect and increase funding for Meals on Wheels: https://www.mealsonwheelsamerica.org/ways-to-advocate/

Today, on the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, we pause to honor the lives lost and recognize the power of serving others.

At Senior Citizens Inc., we are deeply grateful for the volunteers who give their time, compassion, and talents to support our mission of helping people age successfully.

One of those remarkable volunteers is Stephon, an AmeriCorps Seniors Senior Companion at the Ruth Byck Adult Day Health Center.

When Senior Companion Stephon noticed a new client at the Ruth Byck Adult Day Health Center, he quickly realized she spoke only Spanish.

Despite everyone’s efforts, the language barrier left her sitting quietly each day—watching others connect, but unable to join in. One day, as Stephon set up a domino table, he noticed her watching. With a warm smile, he pointed to the chair beside him and invited her to join.
She paused, smiled, and said, “sí.”

That one word changed everything. As they played, Stephon discovered she was excellent at the game. What began as a simple invitation became confidence and connection. Soon she was smiling, laughing, and engaging with those around her. The room that once felt unfamiliar became a place where she belonged.

Through one thoughtful gesture, Stephon didn’t just invite her into a game. He reminded her she was seen. He helped her feel included. He gave her joy.

His service created a connection that day and every day since.

On this National Day of Service, we honor Stephon—and every volunteer who helps make moments of connection, dignity, and joy possible throughout our community.

Thank you for serving. Thank you for caring. Thank you for making a difference.
