This Sunday on the meadow: Cumbia Vortex: Chicha Libre Chicha Libre + Live Visuals by BA Miale B.A Miale!

North America’s psychedelic cumbia pioneers Chicha Libre launched the first psychedelic cumbia and chicha wave in North America in 2006 with its debut album Sonido Amazonico - a tribute to 70’s Peruvian tropical rhythms and psychedelic sounds. Like their mentors, Chicha Libre use surf guitar, organ sounds and latin percussion to play a mixture of borrowed and homegrown sounds.

Have you had the chance to visit Opus 40 and view Harvey Fite’s many carved sculptures throughout the grounds? Today, we’d like to highlight “The Bather” and “Child.”

The Bather, 1938
Believed to be the first of his major pieces, Fite began “The Bather” in the studio of his friend and mentor Tomas Penning. It was finished after Fite had constructed his own home studio. Until recently, this piece stood on the lip of the quarry pool near the house, where the Fites and their friends spent many a summer afternoon.

Child, 1940s
This sculpture depicts a squatting child with his hands in his lap, wearing a rough-textured one-piece garment. Although Child has always perched at the far end of the family swimming pool, keeping a tranquil eye on his surroundings, he has been temporarily relocated to the Fite House.

You can find both of these sculptures in the Fite House when visiting Opus 40. We’re currently open 10am-5pm, Thursday - Monday.

🌿Coming this September: Outdoor Mindfulness: Opus 40 as an embodied experience with Susan West Montgomery🌿 Susan Montgomery

Is it possible to “feel” history? Join us for an intimate, truly immersive, and embodied experience of Opus 40. You will be invited to slow down, to be curious, and to use your senses to connect more deeply with the historic, artistic, and cultural attributes of the site. The session is conducted in the tradition of Shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing, a Japanese mindfulness experience that helps individuals access the healing properties of nature. It begins with warm-ups, centering, and breathing exercises, followed by a walk and an extended sit.

Susan West Montgomery is a Kripalu-certified outdoor mindfulness guide.

⭐️ Euphonia: Balkan & Brass Festival🪊🎶 Featuring Funkrust Brass Band Funkrust Brass Band, an explosive post-apocalyptic disco punk outfit known for gritty original tunes, megaphone vocals, heavy tuba bass lines, thundering percussion, searing brass melodies and an anything-goes performance energy; West Philadelphia Orchestra West Philadelphia Orchestra, who seamlessly meld together traditional Balkan music, klezmer, New Orleans jazz, and Philly funk; ecstatic dance music from the southern Balkans and Turkey courtesy of the Mountain Lions, led by Matt Moran Matt Moran of Slavic Soul Party; and our very own Unicorn Brass Band Unicorn Brass Band, the house band of Kingston’s queer-forward Unicorn Bar, who bring all the pop, disco, and dance.

Expect big horns, bigger rhythms, plus Balkan dance lessons with Noel Kropf, for all levels!
