❗️🗳 WE CAN’T TALK ABOUT VOTING WITHOUT TALKING ABOUT VOTER SUPPRESION. Lots of people have been suggesting voting as a solution to systems change. This mentality often supports a false narrative that voting is accessible to all. As we have seen in Georgia and Wisconsin, voter suppression is rampant. For young people, especially BIPOC young people, voter disenfranchisement is expected to increase in response to the pandemic which puts at risk many traditional methods of youth community organizing. And if your answer is to entirely pivot to digital, you are leaving out communities, particularly young rural voters (18-29) who made up a mere 2% of the 2018 electorate. ⠀
⠀
I wrote for about how COVID-19 requires us to re-think the youth vote (link in bio). Also sharing some thoughts from an interview with where I discussed this.⠀
⠀
So what IS something you can do? ⠀
📣 RAISE AWARENESS about voter suppression and voting. NY: Today is the first day of Early Voting! The single most effective way to get someone to register/vote is through peer-to-peer engagement. Text your friends/family now and ask them if they have a voting plan. ⠀
📚 IF YOU’RE A STUDENT, check/update your address if you are planning to vote by mail if your current plans are uncertain or consider voting early.
💬 EDUCATE your peers on voting methods. The majority of young people do not feel familiar with the vote-by-mail process. Push your schools to implement comprehensive civics education and updated materials for students to vote. Share resources yourself on social and in prominent spaces. ⠀
📝 CONTACT YOUR LEGISLATORS to pass legislation to make voting easier such as universal vote-by-mail, no excuse absentees, more flexible deadlines, and automatic voter registration. ⠀
👁 KEEP PERSPECTIVE voting is only one mechanism to push for change. Anyone who uses voting as their only method of civic participation is complacent. After you vote, urge those who your vote put in office to implement needed institutional change, support local movements and organizations, and keep up momentum not just during even numbered election cycles.
