Stewart is a clever, playful sheep with a huge heart. Famous for teaching other sheep the “paw the human who doesn’t give you enough attention” trick, he’s always finding ways to make us laugh! Rose Willow (AKA Rosie)'s story began in Trumansburg, New York, where she was taken in by a family hoping to breed her for milk. When she tested positive for Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis (CAE), a common viral disease in goats that can be transmitted through milk, she was isolated from the herd and her family began searching for a new home. Rosie arrived at Catskill Animal Sanctuary on Valentine’s Day in 2021, and has been changing hearts and minds ever since!

Rosie is as charming as she is unique, a true “misfit” in all the best ways. She has a way of making everyone feel like her favorite person, sometimes so much so that she wanders off to sunbathe near the humans and forgets where the rest of the herd went. Rosie is so special to CAS and we couldn't imagine this place without her!

W***y was rescued in Fall 2022 from an illegal backyard slaughter operation, where dozens of sheep were found living in severe neglect. W***y was the first sheep to approach our team when we arrived, gently headbutting a caregiver as if to say, “Take me with you!”

Today, W***y still isn’t shy about asking for attention, often approaching guests with a friendly, gentle headbutt. Notably, he especially loves small children. We think he enjoys the fact that they’re closer in size to him! W***y stands out as the social butterfly of his herd and thrives on interacting with friends of all species.

Robinhood is a friendly, affectionate rooster who loves saying hello to everyone he meets. He’ll even come running up to the fenceline as soon as he hears his name called! A true gentleman, Robinhood also looks out for his “ladies." His sweet presence is an invaluable addition to our Sanctuary! Robinhood was rescued in November 2019 by a veterinarian in the animal welfare field after coming from a school hatching project. Like many roosters hatched in classrooms, he was left without a clear future once the project ended, and was set to be “discarded.” Robinhood was lucky that someone instead acknowledged that his life was worth saving!

Horse-drawn carriages still operate in New York City. For years, advocates have been working to end this practice and create a future where horses are no longer used for carriage rides on the city’s streets.

On July 15, Catskill Animal Sanctuary Executive Director Sam Moon spoke before the New York City Council in support of Intro 943, legislation that would ban horse-drawn carriages in NYC.

Our support for this bill comes from the horses we know and love at CAS, horses who, when given the opportunity, build relationships, explore their surroundings, and experience life on their own terms.

Every day, we see the incredible transformations that happen when rescued horses are given safety, care, and the freedom to simply be themselves.

Nina was rescued the day before Easter in 2019, when a couple chose to save a life instead of taking one. They visited a live slaughter market in NYC and persuaded the owner to release a lamb to them. That lamb was Nina! Nina was very sick when she first arrived at CAS. After three months of quarantine and dedicated care, Nina fully recovered and went on to join the Underfoot herd, where she now lives safely and freely.

When Dickon first arrived at Catskill Animal Sanctuary in 2015, he had just been rescued from a backyard slaughter operation in Orange County, New York.

Despite the previous neglect and abuse he experienced, it didn't take long for his gentle personality to shine through. Today, he's what we affectionately call our "therapy goat," often standing beside nervous friends during health treatments or quietly welcoming someone new with a careful little "vibe check."

Now, at an estimated 13 years old, it's Dickon's turn to become an Underfoot!

As one of our newest free-roaming residents, he'll spend his days wandering the Sanctuary at his leisure, visiting his neighbors, grazing in the sunshine, and embracing the peaceful "retirement" that he's earned.
