On October 8, the Wild Rivers Film Tour comes to Santa Fe for a night of inspiring films, community and conservation at Santa Fe Brewing’s The Bridge.

The evening benefits the Caja del Rio Coalition and our work to protect this remarkable landscape just outside Santa Fe.

“Our world is losing visionary spaces.”

Those words appear across the top of artist Cindy Ritzman’s "A Landscape of Great Journey," a painting inspired by the Caja del Rio and by the words of environmental advocate Rev. Andrew Black.

Around the landscape, Cindy’s painting carries a larger message: these are places for peace. Sacred places. Landscapes of great journey.

It is one of two works Cindy created through the Conservation Lands Foundation’s Arts and Advocacy program as part of the Preserving New Mexico’s Landscapes for Tomorrow project.

Art gives us another way to understand what is at stake. The Caja del Rio isn’t simply open space on a map. It is a place capable of inspiring wonder, reflection and connection—and a place worth protecting for generations to come.

Some landscapes stay with you.

Artist Cindy Ritzman created "Big Enough to Hold Anything in You" after hiking in the Diablo Canyon area of the Caja del Rio in October 2025. The painting grew from photographs she took along the way, and from her experience of a landscape expansive enough to hold beauty, solitude and reflection.

Cindy created the work as part of the Conservation Lands Foundation’s Arts and Advocacy program, which supports women artists using their creative voices in service of public lands.

The Caja inspires us in many different ways. Sometimes, protecting a place begins simply with seeing it—and allowing it to move us.

Join the Caja del Rio Coalition and American Rivers for the 2026 Wild Rivers Film Tour in Santa Fe—an evening of powerful films celebrating the rivers, wildlife and landscapes of the West and the people working to protect them.

Our connection to the land often starts with the places and people who shaped us.

Rep. Gabe Vasquez recently joined Rev. Andrew Black on Enchanted Outdoors to talk about conservation, public lands and the deep connections between New Mexico’s landscapes and its communities.

From childhood fishing trips with his grandfather to the work happening today to protect places like the Caja del Rio, the conversation explores why protecting public lands is about more than preserving a landscape. It’s also about wildlife, cultural traditions, community and the ways people have lived in relationship with these places for generations.

The conversation also touches on the Caja del Rio Protection Act, Chamisal National Memorial, our national parks and efforts by Indigenous Gwich’in communities to protect caribou habitat in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

“The Caja is not for sale. Not now, not ever.”

In a recent conversation with Rev. Andrew Black on Enchanted Outdoors, Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández spoke about the importance of permanently protecting the Caja del Rio — for its lands and waters, its cultural heritage, and the communities that have cared for this landscape for generations.

She also highlighted what makes the effort to protect the Caja so powerful: people with different perspectives coming together around a shared understanding that this is a sacred place worth protecting.

The Caja del Rio Protection Act would help ensure this extraordinary landscape in our own backyard is protected from further degradation while preserving respectful, responsible use for generations to come.

Take Care of the Caja

For just a few weeks each spring, the plains prickly pear transforms the Caja with brilliant yellow and peach blossoms.

Its flowers provide nectar and pollen for native bees, while the fruits that follow become an important food source for birds, mammals, reptiles, and even people. Indigenous communities throughout the Southwest have long harvested prickly pear for food and traditional uses.

Take photos, not flowers, and help keep the Caja blooming.
