What do cookie sheets and sponges have to do with the Santa Fe Watershed?

Quite a lot, actually.

This week, Mori shares a simple way to think about how water moves through our landscape. Right now, much of our watershed behaves like a cookie sheet—rain falls on hard, compacted surfaces and quickly runs off, contributing to flooding, erosion, and water loss.

But what if our watershed acted more like a sponge?

By creating more places for water to soak into the ground—through rain gardens, healthy soils, native plants, and green stormwater infrastructure—we can capture precious rainfall, support plants and wildlife, recharge groundwater, and build resilience for future droughts.

Every rain garden is like another pore in the sponge.

🐾 Look who stopped by our wildlife camera in the Upper Santa Fe Watershed!

This curious coyote was spotted out and about during the day. While coyotes are often associated with nighttime howls, they can be active at any time of day, especially when they're searching for food, caring for pups, or simply moving through their territory.

Coyotes are an important part of New Mexico's ecosystem, helping keep rodent populations in check and contributing to a healthy balance in the food web. 🌿💧

Every wildlife sighting is a reminder that the Upper Watershed provides critical habitat for a wide variety of species.

🧤 23 bags of trash removed. One cleaner, healthier watershed.

A huge thank you to our newest Steward Team and Adopt Your Watershed sponsors, Hensel Phelps Construction, for spending their Saturday caring for the Santa Fe River! Together, this incredible group removed 23 bags of litter from the river and surrounding banks in downtown Santa Fe.

Their efforts help protect wildlife, improve water quality, and create a cleaner, safer community for everyone.

As team member Mark Bylenga shared:

"The SF Watershed cleanup is more than an environmental project — we see it as a way to protect public health, strengthen neighborhoods, and create cleaner, safer places for future generations."
