The Colorado River Basin is facing one of the driest summers on record. šŸŒ”ļø Snow that came too little, too late—or not at all—has depleted water supplies heading into the dry season.

In a summer like this, the work doesn’t change—but the urgency does. 🚨 Many of the solutions are already in motion, shaped by years of collaboration across the basin. šŸ¤ The Nature Conservancy's staff and partners are stepping up efforts to protect our forests, conserve water and help balance water needs for the communities, businesses and wildlife that need it most.

The Roadless Rule—which is now in danger of being repealed—is a powerhouse for the outdoor recreation economy.

Every year, millions of people enjoy hiking, hunting, using ATVs and more in the nearly 60 million acres of national forest and national grassland that the Roadless Rule helps to protect.

Areas protected by the Roadless Rule are traversed by 9,300 miles of hiking trails, including large sections of the Continental Divide, Pacific Crest and Appalachian Trail. These areas also offer crucial habitat for trout, salmon, elk and other fish and game.

On July 10, 2026, the Trump administration announced a final rule that will rescind the longstanding definition of what it means to ā€œharmā€ a plant or animal under the Endangered Species Act. The final rule, which will take effect in 60 days, says that habitat destruction is no longer a prohibited form of harm to an endangered species. One week later, the administration announced two additional rules that will weaken protections for endangered species. The first rescinds blanket protections for species listed as ā€œthreatenedā€ under the ESA. The second revises the process for excluding otherwise suitable areas from designation as ā€œcritical habitat.ā€
