Santa Fe Conservation Trust

Santa Fe Conservation Trust We envision a future where everyone in northern New Mexico cherishes nature and works to preserve it for this and future generations. Saving Land. For Everyone.

Forever. New Mexico’s stunning, untouched landscapes—the life-supporting lands essential for healthy wildlife, clean air, pure water, and food-producing soils—are rapidly disappearing. The Santa Fe Conservation Trust is helping to create a network of natural, open lands in and around our communities, forever protected for all living creatures. By providing landowners with tools to place their land

s into voluntary conservation status, we now oversee the protection of more than 45,000 acres in northern New Mexico. The Santa Fe Conservation Trust partners with our community to keep northern New Mexico’s living lands and people flourishing together. We protect culturally and environmentally significant landscapes, ignite people’s passion for nature, and enable the continual regeneration of our healthy place. We are a private non-profit organization, supported by the generosity of hundreds of people who share our passion- a healthy environment sustaining a healthy community. Learn more about the Santa Fe Conservation Trust and ways you can join us in our efforts to save the enchantment of Northern New Mexico.

How do we actually protect land? 🌄

In this video, Conservation Director Ariel Patashnik explains one of the most important tools we use at Santa Fe Conservation Trust: conservation easements.

A conservation easement is a voluntary agreement between a landowner and a land trust that helps protect the conservation values of a property forever — whether that’s wildlife habitat, open space, agricultural land, cultural resources, or recreational access.

Every landscape is unique, and every agreement is carefully designed with the landowner to ensure the land’s most important qualities are preserved for future generations.

It’s meaningful, long-term work built on partnership, stewardship, and a shared commitment to protecting the landscapes we all love. 💚

Blythe and Elizabeth spent the evening at the historic St. Francis Auditorium enjoying a performance by Lone Piñon as they scoped out the band's sound ahead of their appearance at Stand Up for Nature later this fall.

The audience was treated to a wonderful evening of New Mexico's rich musical traditions, brought to life through Lone Piñon's unique blend of old-time string music, vibrant rhythms, and deep cultural roots. It was a joyful celebration of the sounds, stories, and spirit of the Southwest, and a preview of what's to come at SUN 2026.

If last night's performance was any indication, we're all in for a memorable experience this fall!

🌬️ Another Great Vámonos Walk! 🌿🥾
Randle Charles welcomed the group and adjusted today's route to keep everyone safe and comfortable in the windy weather. Instead of heading toward Swan Park, we explored a more sheltered trail and enjoyed a little adventure along the way.

Vámonos Walks are free and open to everyone, and we're grateful to all who joined us for an evening of fresh air, community, and exploration - without the hailstorm we got last time!

Join us June 10th for our next walk - https://sfct.org/event/vamonos-wellness-wednesday-june-10/

🚶‍♀️🌿 Step into better health with ¡Vámonos Walks!
Regular exercise is one of the best things you can do for your health—and walking is a simple, powerful place to start. It can help manage weight, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, strengthen bones and muscles, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and type II diabetes.

Even better? Spending time outdoors in nature can boost your immune system, improve your mood, and lower stress. Just getting out for a walk—even starting small and building up to 30–60 minutes a few times a week—can make a real difference in how you feel.

What is the Santa Fe Walking Collaborative?
Since 2017, the Santa Fe Walking Collaborative has brought together community partners to support public health, connect people to parks and trails, and make outdoor activity accessible for all. Through a series of walks across the city, we create opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to get moving and connect with community.

Led by Santa Fe Conservation Trust, alongside partners including the City of Santa Fe, Santa Fe County, NM Department of Health, New Vistas, NM Aging Services, AmeriCorps Santa Fe RSVP, and La Familia Medical Center.

Come walk with us and be part of a healthier, more connected community!

Protecting land and building trails 🌲🥾

At Santa Fe Conservation Trust, conservation goes beyond protecting open spaces across northern New Mexico — we also have a deep legacy of creating and maintaining trails for our community to enjoy.

Thanks to the vision of our first Executive Director, Dale Ball, and the support of our organization, the 35-mile Dale Ball Trail system became a reality. Since then, we’ve helped create more than 80 miles of trails throughout the region and continue to maintain them alongside dedicated volunteers and our city and county partners.

So the next time you’re out enjoying the trails, know that Santa Fe Conservation Trust is helping keep them safe, accessible, and connected to the landscapes we all love. 💚

🚶 Visitors Welcome on the Trail
Lowell was in Santa Fe from Atlanta for a conference when his wife discovered the Santa Fe Conservation Trust through social media. The result? Lowell and a group of friends joined us for yesterday's ¡Vámonos! Friday Walk with Our Elders along the Santa Fe River Trail.

On a spectacular spring day, old and new friends came together to enjoy the beauty of the river corridor, great conversation, and a shared appreciation for getting outside. A good time was had by all!
