Solstice Project

Solstice Project Our research continues to enrich studies of archaeology, archaeoastronomy, anthropology and Native American cultures

The Solstice Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to the study of the rich astronomical heritage of the ancient Chaco culture of the American Southwest. Founded in 1978 by Anna Sofaer, initial efforts focused on the study, documentation and preservation of the Sun Dagger site, a remarkable celestial calendar of the ancestral Pueblo Indians. Subsequent Solstice Project research and films

have revealed that the Chaco culture's ceremonial architecture was built to align with the cycles of the sun and moon, and that the elaborately engineered Chaco Great North Road was constructed to commemorate celestial north.

TWO OPPORTUNITIES to meet ANNA SOFAER!

Anna will be presenting at the first-ever Santa Fe Magazine Festival, happening June 12–14 on the beautiful St. John’s College campus in Santa Fe. Three days, 85 presenters, 35 sessions filled with ideas, art, music, storytelling, culture, food, conversation, and unexpected experiences.

On Saturday, June 13, at 11:30 am, join Anna to explore the wisdom of the ancient ones and how they integrated sacred celestial knowledge. Anna will share a 35-minute extended trailer of her new film “From the Mind’s Eye: Another Way of Knowing,” an exploration of four ancient sites, thousands of years and miles apart, that parallel the ancient Puebloan site of Chaco Canyon, in alignments, elegant geometries and rituals --- Stonehenge, Palenque, Hopewell and Chaco --- each inspired by the sun and moon as powerful animated beings.

Then don’t miss a second opportunity on Sunday, June 14, at 10:30 am. Anna and archaeologist Richard Friedman will discuss the complex Sun Dagger site --- called an “American Stonehenge” in Science 80 Magazine --- exploring in an interactive computer model its brilliant unity of the sun and moon. A small site revealing monumental knowledge and, as you will hear from Tewa educator Alfonso Ortiz in portions of the early “Sun Dagger” film, built with profound respect for the spiritual power of the sun and moon.

My friend, author Jim Graham, wrote this powerful op-ed for the Cleveland Plain Dealer about why the federal administration must stop "desecrations of ancient land art" across the country.

The Trump administration is bent on erasing America’s rich Indigenous history from signage at our National Parks and museums. Now, it is literally scraping it from the earth in the few places where Native heritage is still richly displayed. This must stop, writes guest columnist James W. Graham, a...

DOLORES RATZÁN and ANNA SOFAER
Anna Sofaer and her Solstice Project’s crew filmed in Palenque, Mexico, in December of 2025 for her fourth film, From the Mind’s Eye." With the guidance of Maya archaeoastronomer Alonso Mendez, they recorded the magnificent temples’ alignments with auspicious solar and lunar events.
In February of 2026, Anna had the good fortune to visit Dolores Ratzán, a Maya elder and healer in her village of Santiago, on the edge of the sacred Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. Guided by Dolores, Anna learned how this traditional village had preserved their ancient knowledge of the Sun and Moon and handed it down for generations. When the Spanish conquistadors built their cathedral on top of the ancient Maya temple at the heart of the home of the ancestors and destroyed imagery of their sacred understandings, the Maya ingeniously preserved the knowledge in their weavings, which live to this very day.
