Tribal leaders are prepared for a legal fight to protect Native lands, as the federal government tries to revoke protection of Chaco, Bears Ears and other sacred lands. "We will pursue every available legal course of action to stop these illegal attacks on Native homelands, culture, and people," says Matthew L. If you haven’t seen the "Makowa: The Worlds Above Us" exhibit at the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture in Santa Fe, it’s on view through August 17. Through constellations, eclipses, clouds, birds and more, the exhibit invites visitors to take part in ways that people—especially Indigenous peoples of the Southwest— have long made sense of and connected with the worlds above.

As the BLM considers the flood of public comments opposing its plan to lift all restrictions and protective measures around Chaco Canyon to allow and support drilling for oil and gas, it’s critical to stress that as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Chaco Canyon has legal protection under international convention.
