Last night, Disability Pride New Mexico proudly hosted the Fourth Annual New Mexico Accessibility Awards, celebrating the individuals and organizations that are making New Mexico more accessible, inclusive, and welcoming for everyone.

The evening was a powerful reminder that accessibility is not a partisan issue—it is a people issue. We were honored to welcome the Democratic and Republican nominees for Governor of New Mexico, along with Republican and Democratic legislators, elected officials, and community leaders from across our state. Their presence reinforced a shared commitment to advancing accessibility and disability rights for all New Mexicans. We were especially honored by the attendance of Lieutenant Governor Howie Morales, State Treasurer Laura Montoya, Representative Tara L. Lujan, Representative Kathleen Cates, and Disability Pride New Mexico Board Member Kaity Ellis.

A heartfelt thank you to Nathan Gomme for recognizing the many families, community partners, and sponsors whose generosity and commitment helped make this event possible. Your support continues to build a stronger, more inclusive New Mexico.

We would also like to extend our deepest appreciation to Cornerstone of Excellence for their partnership in helping plan and execute this year’s Accessibility Awards. Your dedication, collaboration, and countless hours behind the scenes helped make this celebration a success, and we are truly grateful for your support.

In addition, we were proud to present Certificates of Recognition to Mandy’s Farm and the New Mexico Public Education Department, Office of Special Education, in recognition of their ongoing commitment to advancing accessibility, inclusion, and opportunities for New Mexicans with disabilities.

To every nominee, recipient, volunteer, sponsor, elected official, performer, and attendee—thank you for helping make this celebration so meaningful. The progress we celebrate today is the result of countless people working together to remove barriers, expand opportunities, and ensure that New Mexicans with disabilities can fully participate in every aspect of community life.

Today we celebrate 36 years of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)! 🇺🇸♿

Thirty-six years ago, on July 26, 1990, the ADA became law, affirming that people with disabilities deserve equal opportunity, full participation, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency.

The ADA has opened doors, removed barriers, and changed millions of lives. It has made our schools, workplaces, businesses, transportation systems, and communities more accessible. But our work is far from over. True accessibility means more than compliance—it means creating communities where every person belongs and has the opportunity to thrive.

Here in New Mexico, we celebrate the advocates, leaders, allies, families, and people with disabilities who continue to push our state forward. Every curb cut, caption, interpreter, accessible entrance, inclusive classroom, and meaningful employment opportunity exists because people refused to accept barriers as the status quo.

As we commemorate the ADA’s 36th anniversary, let us recommit ourselves to building a New Mexico where accessibility is expected, inclusion is intentional, and disability is recognized as a vital part of the diversity that strengthens our communities.

Yesterday, Santa Fe was filled with Disability Pride, community, music, bubbles, and a powerful call for accessibility and civil rights!

Together, we marched through the streets, celebrated the City of Santa Fe’s proclamation recognizing July as Disability Pride Month, heard from community leaders and advocates, and reminded everyone that accessibility is for everyone and disability rights are civil rights.

From handmade signs and live music to families celebrating beneath a sky full of bubbles, these photos capture the joy, strength, and diversity of our disability community.

Thank you to everyone who marched, rolled, performed, spoke, volunteered, hosted a resource table, or joined us at the festival. Yesterday showed what is possible when our community comes together, raises its voice, and celebrates disability with pride.

We are here. We belong. And together, we are creating a more accessible New Mexico.
