A New Chapter, Same Mission.

Being a parent today isn’t easy. Between social media, online games, smartphones, and apps that seem to change every week, it can feel impossible to keep up with what our kids are doing online.

That’s exactly why we started Shield the Innocent.

Shield the Innocent is a nonprofit organization that helps parents understand the online world their kids are growing up in. We talk about the dangers children face online, teach parents what to look for, and help families find simple, practical ways to keep their kids safer.

You don’t have to be a technology expert to protect your kids. And you shouldn’t have to figure it all out on your own.

As a dad of three girls and someone who has spent years investigating crimes against children, I’ve seen firsthand just how dangerous the online world can be. But I’ve also seen how much of a difference it makes when parents have the right information and tools.

That’s what Shield the Innocent is all about. Helping parents protect their kids before something happens.

When we started this organization, we never imagined where God would lead us. What began as a calling to help families has grown into something bigger than we could have planned.

One thing I’ve learned along the way is that obedience to God doesn’t always mean understanding His plan. Sometimes it simply means trusting Him enough to take the next step.

Earlier this year, that next step brought our family to the Lake Norman area of North Carolina.

We moved here in the middle of the year and have spent the last several months getting settled, learning our new community, and adjusting to this new chapter.

Now that we’re getting settled, we wanted to let everyone know that Shield the Innocent is here, too!

We’re excited to bring our mission to the Lake Norman area and start connecting with local parents, schools, churches, and community organizations.

We offer presentations and resources that help parents better understand things like social media, online gaming, sextortion, and the apps their kids are using. We try to take complicated and sometimes scary topics and break them down into information parents can actually understand and use.

Our goal isn’t to scare parents. It’s to help them feel more confident about protecting their children.

Our faith has always been at the center of this mission, and we believe God has brought us here for a reason. We may not know exactly what He has planned, but we’re excited to see where He leads us.

To our new neighbors in Denver, Sherrills Ford, Mooresville, and the surrounding Lake Norman communities, we’re happy to be here, and we’d love to connect with you!

And to everyone back in Sanford and Lee County who has supported Shield the Innocent from the beginning, thank you. That community will always be a special part of our story, and we look forward to continuing to serve families there as well.

**** PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN FROM ONLINE PREDATORS ****

June is Internet Safety Month. To mark it, the national ICAC program has shared resources you can pass along to your community.

The NCICAAC Task Force is hosting a free webinar on keeping kids safe while playing online video games. It's aimed at parents who want a clearer picture of how online gaming works and where the risks are.

Topics include: talking to strangers online, how age verification works and where it breaks down, and how to check whether a game is age-appropriate. Parents will also learn how kids can accidentally share personal information through screen names and in-game chat, and why the difference between private and public servers matters.

The session will cover parental controls, privacy settings, and setting reasonable time limits. Sign up if you want practical steps you can take right away.

He is Risen!

This Easter Sunday, we celebrate the hope, sacrifice, and victory found in Jesus Christ. The resurrection reminds us that light overcomes darkness, and love always wins.

At Shield the Innocent, our mission is rooted in that same truth protecting what is good, standing for what is right, and defending the vulnerable.

Just as Christ is our shield and our strength, we are called to be a shield for the innocent in a world that needs protection now more than ever.

Today, we pray for families, for children, and for communities, that they may walk in truth, safety, and hope.

“The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and He helps me.” Psalm 28:7

As parents, most of us would never let our kids ride in a car with someone we don’t know. If your child asked to go to a sleepover at a friend’s house, you’d probably want to know who the parents are, where they live, and if the environment is safe.

We do this because protecting our kids matters.

But when it comes to technology, many families unknowingly do the opposite.

We hand our children a smartphone, tablet, or gaming console and instantly give millions of strangers potential access to them through online games, messaging apps, and social platforms often with very little parental control or oversight.

The internet can be an incredible tool, but it can also open doors to people who do not have your child’s best interest in mind.

Before giving your child a device, take the time to:
• Understand the apps and games they’re using
• Set up parental controls and privacy settings
• Talk openly with your child about online safety
• Stay involved in their digital world

Just like you wouldn’t send your child somewhere without knowing who they’re with, don’t send them into the digital world without guidance and protection.

Love is more then just saying the word

As parents, caregivers, and a community of faith, we are called to protect the children God has entrusted to us. In a digital world where danger can hide behind screens, loving our kids means staying vigilant, informed, and present.

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Proverbs 4:23

Love is action. Love is protection. Love is standing in the gap for the innocent.

This Valentine’s Day, let’s commit to intentional conversations, prayerful guidance, and active involvement in our children’s online lives so they can grow in safety, wisdom, and faith.

A man allegedly spent months grooming two young girls online through Roblox, then moved the conversation to Snapchat before driving nearly 24 hours to abduct them. Thankfully, the girls were found safe but this is a stark reminder of how online grooming works.

Predators don’t start with threats, they start with friendship, attention, and trust.

Talk with your kids about who they’re talking to online
Monitor games, apps, and private messages
Reinforce that online “friends” are still strangers

This is why Shield the Innocent exists to protect kids, empower parents, and fight online exploitation before it turns into real-world harm.

Looks like tomorrow might be a “stuck at home” kind of day with the roads iced over and no school in many areas. While you’re inside with the kids, it’s a perfect opportunity to check in on their online activity, talk about internet safety, and set some healthy tech boundaries.

At Shield the Innocent, we exist to protect kids, empower parents, and fight online exploitation even on days when snow or ice keeps everyone inside.

We are incredibly grateful to Cool Springs Baptist Church for hosting tonight’s Digital Safety Talk and to Rooted Learning Homeschool Center for inviting us in to share this important information.

A special thank you to Agent McNeill with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation for stepping in and presenting critical, much-needed information. Your expertise and willingness to serve made a meaningful impact on everyone in attendance.

Digital Safety Talk – This Friday
