❤️ Tom’s story is one of those stories that reminds us why rescue matters. ❤️

Contra Costa Animal Services has a group of dedicated advocates who keep an eye on the dogs who are at risk of being overlooked. Without them, innocent dogs like Tom can end up on death row simply because they don’t have enough time.

We received an email about Tom after he was found with another dog named Jerry. The two were inseparable. Then, Jerry was adopted by another family, and Tom was left behind.

At first, Tom wasn’t doing well. He was scared, shut down, and unsure of his surroundings. But little by little, he began to show us who he really is ... a very sweet and gentle boy. 🥹❤️

Once Tom realized Jerry wasn’t coming back, he started coming out of his shell. He was introduced to group play and did wonderfully. Thankfully, just when his time was running out, a wonderful family stepped up to foster him.

And the rest is history. ❤️

Tom has been living with Cathy, Dennis and Tyler for the past couple of weeks, and he is doing really well! He has met several other dogs and has been wonderful around them. 🐶🐶

We haven’t tested him with cats yet — that’s next on our list!

Now Tom is ready to find his forever family. 🏡❤️

🐾 Moose Needs a Foster Home — Urgently

Moose is such a good boy, but unfortunately, he just hasn’t had any luck finding a safe place to hang out while we search for his forever family.

His first foster ended up moving. His second foster had cats—Moose was tested with cats and did well, but the resident cats were unfortunately traumatized by his presence. Most recently, we tried another home, but the fencing is too short. Since Moose is an excellent jumper, he could easily hop the fence and wander off, so it simply isn’t a safe setup for him.

💙 We urgently need a safe foster home where Moose can be loved, cared for, and kept secure. The rescue will provide full support throughout his foster stay, including everything he needs until we find the right forever family.

Moose is a wonderful boy, and Shepherd lovers are going to adore him! 🐕❤️

💛 Kiwi is looking for a new foster home! 🐾

Kiwi absolutely loves kids — and they love her right back! 🥰 She’s a sweet, affectionate girl who enjoys being part of a family.

Her current foster family has an older dog who is needing more care and, unfortunately, has very little tolerance for Kiwi. They’ve had a few arguments recently, so the family feels it’s best for everyone to find Kiwi a new home where she can thrive.

We’d love to find Kiwi a more active foster home where she can get plenty of love, attention, and time with her people. 🏡❤️

Those of you in San Jose may remember Willow, who we originally called Houdini. Somehow, God knows how, she ended up on the streets and spent eight long weeks dodging everyone who tried to catch her.

Finally, she was trapped and taken to the shelter, where we went and picked her up and brought her into a foster home. It soon became clear that Willow would come out of her shell and feel more comfortable if she had another dog by her side.

My goal was to find her a home with another dog. And then, as fate would have it, another stray fell into our laps—a sweet boy who literally jumped into a woman’s van! His name was Ziggy.

I ended up placing Willow and Ziggy together in a foster home, secretly hoping I could find them a forever home together. That was my selfish side coming out—I just couldn’t bear the thought of separating them. But I was also completely open to finding Willow a home with another dog, knowing that Ziggy, being the easygoing boy he is, could pretty much fit in anywhere.

And then, finally, we found the most perfect family. They already had an older dog and were more than happy to open their hearts and home to both Willow and Ziggy.

And the rest, as they say, is history. ❤️

Two stray dogs who found their way into our lives, found each other, and ultimately found the family they were always meant to have. Sometimes, the best endings are the ones we never could have planned. 🐾❤️

We had the pleasure of taking part in the 3rd Annual Open House hosted by this past Saturday! 🐾

We were proud to bring our adoptable pups Kiwi, Chonk, and Moose. Although none of them found their forever homes that day, they had a wonderful time socializing and meeting so many loving humans. ❤️

A huge thank you to Michelle and the entire team at Dry Creek Animal Hospital for including us and for supporting rescue. We’re so grateful for your kindness and generosity! 🐶💕

Princess was one of my very first rescues from Iran back when I represented the Vafa Animal Shelter. In those days, depending on where a volunteer flight es**rt was headed, I would be connected with a local rescue or shelter through my contact at Humane Society International, and I worked directly with them to place our dogs.

In Princess’s case, she made her way to Florida. One of the greatest gifts has been that her devoted dad, RJ, has stayed in touch with us all these years. He’s continued to send photos and little updates, which always make my heart smile.

I recently asked RJ if he’d be willing to share a little about life with Princess so I could pass it along to all of you.

From RJ:

Princess is a 13-year-old hound, and she has owned me for over 12 years. She is my best friend and truly the best dog ever.

Princess was born on April 17, 2013, in Iran. She was rescued and brought to the Vafa Shelter before making her journey to America. She eventually arrived at the Halifax Humane Society in Daytona Beach, Florida, where I adopted her on April 6, 2014.

Princess has been nothing short of amazing and is doing wonderfully. She had to learn how to eat dog food and even how to “speak English”—and she mastered both! She gets walked every single day and has become quite the local celebrity in our neighborhood. Everyone knows her name and her incredible story.

Stories like Princess’s are why rescue is so meaningful. A dog who began life as a stray in Iran found her way halfway around the world into the arms of someone who adores her. More than 12 years later, she’s still living the life every dog deserves.

A Rescue Story About Failure

🐾 At the San Jose shelter, his name was Chuck. And Chuck was one of those dogs you couldn't help but love.

He was always happy to see you. Always friendly. Always ready with that big, hopeful smile. He was simply a good dog.

But the shelter life was hard on him. And slowly, the notes started to pile up.

Not always great with other dogs.

Nervous at the vet.

Struggling in the shelter.

And somewhere along the way, those notes started to become who Chuck was on paper—instead of anyone seeing the dog standing right in front of them.

Then Chuck ran out of time.

At the very last minute, One Planet Rescue stepped in. They didn't know exactly how his story would end.
They just knew it shouldn't end there.

They gave Chuck a chance. An extraordinary foster family opened their home to him.

They even gave him a new name: Roux—a little nod to their family's New Orleans flavor and a way of saying, You're one of us now. ❤️

And something remarkable happened.

The dog who supposedly wasn't great with other dogs moved into a home...with three dog siblings.
And he fit. He played.
He relaxed. He loved.

He finally got to be the dog that so many of us at the shelter knew was in there all along.

Is Roux nervous at the vet sometimes?
Yep.
Does he love every dog he meets?
Eh, who does? But he's getting better at making new friends.

Those aren't character flaws. They're normal dog things.

Sometimes shelter dogs are judged by who they are during the most stressful, frightening and confusing chapter of their lives. A note gets written. A label gets attached.

And suddenly that label becomes their entire story.

But a shelter is only one chapter.

Chuck just needed someone willing to turn the page.

One Planet Rescue did. His foster family did.

And Roux showed everyone exactly who he really was.

So yes...
Technically, this story was a failure.

A big one.

Because Roux's foster family failed spectacularly.

They fell in love.

And they decided they simply couldn't live without him. ❤️

Chuck got his chance-- which allowed Roux to get his family.

And this is one foster fail we are very, very happy to celebrate. 🐾❤️

San Jose Animal Advocates: I know that if you had even the slightest suspicion that this was happening to those dogs, there’s no way you would have advocated for them to be sent there.

My heart goes out to you because I know how painful this must be. As heartbreaking as it is, I think it’s also a reminder for all of us that we can’t blindly trust anyone. No matter who recommends or approves a rescue—including a shelter—we still have to do our own due diligence and make sure the dogs are truly going somewhere safe.

Run free, Arnold, Lucious, and Zeus. You deserved so much better. 💔

💔 Our hearts are broken.

We have learned that Arnold, Lucious, and Zeus–dogs we advocated for and helped secure placement with Miranda's Rescue–were among those found deceased during the recent recovery of animal remains. We were previously notified that Zeus was euthanized for behavior. **We never imagined any animal would be shot in the head.**

All three dogs were placed on “Needs Rescue - Final” and were scheduled for euthanasia at San José Animal Care & Services. Arnold was previously adopted from SJACS and returned with a bite (making rescue placement very difficult). Unfortunately, none of these dogs received interest from local rescues.

Miranda's Rescue was an approved rescue partner with SJACS and was in good standing with the County of Humboldt and City of Fortuna at the time these dogs were transferred. **We are so sorry; had we known dogs were shot at Miranda's, we would not have advocated for them to go there.***

***Miranda’s did not inform us that Arnold and Lucious would be killed and found in a mass grave.***

In 2025 and 2026, San José Animal Advocates assisted in the transfer of 18 dogs from SJACS to Miranda’s. Four were returned to San José following the investigation. At this time, the status of the remaining dogs transferred is unverified, and we sincerely hope they are safe and living the lives we all wanted for them.

Rescue work is extremely hard. Every day, we witness animals being failed by people. They are abandoned, neglected, abused, surrendered, and discarded. Far too many end up in overcrowded shelters, facing euthanasia. That is why we fight so hard for animals in need and work tirelessly to find them another chance.

Today, we mourn Arnold, Lucious, Zeus, and the many other animals who lost their lives.

Our hearts are with every volunteer, foster, rescuer, shelter employee, and supporter who cared about them.

Run free, boys! You were loved, and you will never be forgotten. 💔 🌈

Urgent Foster Needed for Sweet Phoebe ❤️

I’m hoping someone in our community can help.

Phoebe is a gentle, loving 2-year-old girl who had been living in a boarding kennel for over a month because her rescue didn’t have a local foster home. With very few volunteers available to walk her, she spent most of her days in a kennel.

A wonderful woman named Gloria, who had previously adopted one of rescue dogs and later fostered another, generously opened her home to Phoebe. Although Gloria relied on a walker and oxygen, the two formed an immediate bond. One of my volunteers was helping walk Phoebe several times a week, and as recently as this morning, everything seemed to be going beautifully.

Tragically, Gloria’s neighbor stopped by today to bring her bottled water and found that she had unexpectedly passed away.

Now, through no fault of her own, Phoebe has once again lost the person she loved. If another foster isn’t found quickly, she’ll have to return to the boarding kennel.

If you have room in your heart and your home to foster this sweet girl, even temporarily, please let me know. She’s affectionate, gentle, and deserves the chance to grieve in a loving home instead of going back to a kennel.

4 years ago today, on the Fourth of July, a frightened, emaciated pit bull named Elliott got the second chance he had been waiting for.

A few days earlier, I met him at the SJ shelter. He was so painfully thin that it took my breath away. An elderly woman was holding him in her arms, wrapped in blankets, as she surrendered him. I spoke with her for a few minutes, and although I walked away, I simply couldn’t leave Elliott behind in my heart.

I posted a plea, asking if anyone could open their home to foster him. I promised that if someone stepped up, One Planet Rescue would bring him into our program.

Shirin and Brent answered that call.

On July 4th, Elliott walked into their home—and into the life he had always deserved.

Over the past 4 years, I’ve had the incredible privilege of watching him blossom. The scared, skeletal dog I first met has been replaced by a joyful, goofy, deeply loved boy. His transformation is a beautiful reminder of what compassion, patience, and love can do.

One of the unexpected gifts of Elliott’s journey is that Shirin and I became friends. Because of that, I still get to see this sweet boy regularly—and this holiday weekend, I even have the joy of dogsitting him.

Happy “Gotcha Day” anniversary, sweet Elliott. Your story is one I’ll never forget.

And to Shirin and Brent… thank you for saying “yes” when it mattered most. You didn’t just foster a dog—you changed his life forever. ❤️🇺🇸🐾
