Something big is growing at the . 🐛💛
Today we cut the ribbon on our brand new preschool and we could not be more excited to welcome San Diego families into this space. Every classroom and every little detail was built with one thing in mind: your child.

Our licensed preschool opens in August 2026 and is now enrolling for ages 2 to 5. Play-based learning, kindergarten readiness, swim lessons, gymnastics, flexible scheduling, and a team of experienced staff who are background-checked and trained to put your child first.

“Make commotion.” 🇫🇯 That’s the energy Shiwani brings to everything she does. She’s our Collaborative Coordinator and Trainer for the Youth Homeless Systems Improvements Project, she’s Indo-Fijian, and she grew up in a community where no one ever shows up alone.

As a South Asian woman, she was often told to be quiet. She chose something different.

In this reel, Amber, Camp Coordinator at the , shares how intentional actions like greeting a child by name, offering a warm welcome, and building genuine connections can help turn shy campers into confident participants. Through PYD, staff are encouraged to lead with empathy, kindness, and purpose, creating a sense of belonging that helps every child feel seen, valued, and supported. That’s the power of PYD.

AAPI Heritage Month may be wrapping up, but the lessons Sam carries don’t have an expiration date. ❤️

Sam is a Support Specialist under our Direct Cash Transfer Program and a first-gen Vietnamese American who found his way back to his culture three years ago, guided by a best friend, a temple visit, and a bowl of canh his mom used to make. He shows up to the Y every day with that same energy and no judgment, just “hey, we welcome you.” 🙏🇻🇳

Positive Youth Development (PYD) is about helping young people grow with confidence, support and trust. 🤸‍♀️🙌

Gymnastics Director Linnea shares how PYD has strengthened the coach-athlete relationship in gymnastics by creating authentic connections and empowering kids to lead their OWN growth. Whether a gymnast is working through a fear, overcoming a mental block or trying a new skill, our coaches focus on supporting the WHOLE child, not just the athlete. By meeting kids where they are, celebrating what makes them unique and providing a safe, encouraging environment, we help them build confidence both in and out of the gym. That’s the power of PYD.

450 staff. One mission: keep San Diego safe in the water. 💦🩵

A few Sundays ago, our aquatics team from across San Diego County came together for Poolooza, our annual all-day training event bringing together swim instructors, lifeguards, trainers, and directors under one roof.

Backboard rescues. Emergency drills. Adaptive aquatics training. Team coordination. And a whole lot of heart.

May is National Water Safety Month, and we want you to know: there is no safer place to swim in San Diego than a YMCA pool. That is not just a promise. It is something our team trains for, prepares for, and shows up for every single day.

Thank you to every member of our aquatics team. You are the reason families feel safe, confident, and welcome in the water. 🏊🛟
