Our City Conference Mission Fed Student Athletes of the Year for Spring 2026 are: Nicholas Nelson from Canyon Hills Lacrosse and Matilda Meyer from Mission Bay Swim & Dive.

Nicholas is a 4 year varsity letter winner in lacrosse who also plays water polo. He is team captain of both programs, leading & mentoring young players. He helped lead his team to its first playoff appearance since 2018. Over his years in lacrosse, he has received numerous awards: Team MVP, Offensive POY, CIF 1st & 2nd Team All League. Nicholas is a 4 year Viola Section Leader in the CHHS orchestra & helps peers with basic techniques, prepping for tests, & playing with confidence. He was awarded Orchestra Student of the Year & district honor orchestra. He volunteers setting up church events and spends time in the CHHS music dept. painting and updating music classes with new equipment and soundproofing. He received a County of San Diego Certificate of Recognition for his community work and was recognized as a performer in the Holiday Legislative Open House. "Nicholas demonstrates dedication across athletics, academics, and the arts. He shows consistent leadership and willingness to help others while maintaining a high level of involvement within CHHS."-Jonn Pisapia, AD

Matilda is the swim & water polo captain. She has been a CIF Finalist in swim the past 2 years & has won Team MVP & Most Inspirational during her time with the team. She is the President of the Eco Club, co-founder of Mediums of Mental Health, & participated in the Aspen Challenge. Matilda is the class valedictorian, an International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate, received the Seal of Biliteracy, the Science Outstanding Student Award, & the Social Studies Outstanding Student Award. "Matilda excels in and out of the pool & she is Mission Bay's class valedictorian. She has accomplished nearly every academic achievement possible while also being a leader on multiple teams, captaining both the water polo and swim teams. Her water polo coach described her as the person "all teammates looked at when things weren't going well." Our Coastal Conference Mission Fed Student Athletes of the Year for Spring 2026 are: Max Lesniewski from Del Lago Academy Track & Field and Alexa Baird from Rock Academy Beach Volleyball.

Max is a 3 sport athlete and is team captain and a 2x varsity letter winner in track. He is a three time CIF D3 Championship Qualifier and qualified for State in 2025. He has served as an intern at Grace Lutheran Church and played a key role in founding the Bible Study Club for which he is currently Club President. Max participated in mission trips to New Mexico, contributing to service projects at Broken Arrow Bible Ranch. "Max is one of the hardest working student athletes I've had the pleasure to work with. He consistently brings a positive attitude, leads by example, and demonstrates genuine care for those around him. His commitment to serving others both on and off campus, reflects the kind of character and integrity that makes him truly deserving of this recognition."-Ben Gravenkamp, AD

Alexa is a talented multisport athlete who plays beach volleyball and indoor volleyball but also played soccer and basketball this past season. She has received multiple all league nominations as a beach volleyball and indoor volleyball player and helped lead her team to the #6 seed in Division 2 for Beach Volleyball this year. She is the Event Coordinator for ASB which helps plan the dances & other activities. She is part of the Warrior Ambassadors, a class representative, & serves in the kids ministry in her church. She has earned Principal's Honor Roll all 4 years & has been named a Scholar Captain for beach volleyball. "I have had the opportunity to work with her for the past year and a half, and she has been a leader from day one. She consistently embraces challenges and works hard to meet and exceed them. She is a proven winner-not only in athletics, but in how she approaches every aspect of school life. She leads by example and her work ethic inspires those around her to push themselves and improve. Our Frontier Conference Mission Fed Student Athletes of the Year for Spring 2026 are: Jesus Hernandez Fernandez from Gompers Prep Track & Field & Danilyn Henson from Victory Christian Track & Field.

Jesus is captain of his track & field team & was a CIF Scholar Captain & the 2026 HSSA Award Recipient. Jesus is ASB Class President & gives his time to STAR/PAL Making Changes Program, SDPD Cadet Program, and volunteers for Friday Night Live as an activist for the Better Community Youth Council & in their mentoring program. He is an Honor Roll Recipient, QuestBridge College Prep Scholar, Horatio Alger California State Scholar Award Recipient, Harvard Prize Book Award Recipient, AP Scholar Award Recipient, USC Norman Topping Scholar, The B.R.I.D.G.E. Pitch Master Award Winner, and the ELKS Most Valuable Student National Semi-Finalist. "Jesus exemplifies what it means to be a true student athlete at Gompers Preparatory Academy. Our Southeastern Conference Mission Fed Student Athletes of The Year for Spring 2026 are: Alberto Castro from Calexico High School Track & Field and Zoe Baxter from Southwest EC Swim & Dive.

Alberto always demonstrates respect, integrity, and kindness regardless of competitive stakes. He is a strong student who is always a great individual to coaches, teammates, and officials. He constantly picks up his teammates and leads by example. Our Southern Conference Mission Fed Student Athletes of the Year for Spring 2026 are: Jordyn Navarro from Borrego Springs Baseball and Anavey Gonzalez from Borrego Springs Softball.

Jordyn helped lead his team to a league title and a perfect 8-0 record, a #1 seed in Division 5AA and the school's first ever CIFSDS D5AA Championship in baseball. He was named to the 2nd team all Manzanita league in 2025. Jordyn was also a member of the soccer team getting Rookie of the Year honors and Most Improved. He takes part in fundraising activities for both programs and has been named Student Of The Month. "Jordyn has a magnetic personality that the other students follow. As he continues to improve as a student, it draws others to achieve the same."-Andrew Macuga, Head Baseball Coach

Anavey is a three sport athlete who helped lead softball team to the first D5AA Championship in school history. She has excelled in interscholastic competition, earning recognition as a key contributor to both her team's success and championship appearances. She consistently demonstrates exceptional sportsmanship by encouraging teammates, respecting opponents, and upholding the integrity of the game. Her commitment to fair play and positive leadership has made a lasting impact on her peers and the broader athletic community. She is a CIFSDS SAAC member, the ASB President, and a member of Interact and the Soroptimist Club. As a member of Interact, she helps coordinate service projects to help others and the Soroptimist Club is a global volunteer organization that provides women and girls with access to education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment. She has been named Student of the Month and is enrolled in CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) courses. Our North County Conference Mission Fed Student Athletes of the Year for Spring 2026 are: Khang Pham from Carlsbad Volleyball and Makena McLaughlin from Westview Track and Field.

Khang set the tone for his team with consistent leadership, accountability, & encouragement for his teammates. He was Vice President and Co-Founder of the Mu Alpha Theta match club, a tutor with the CHS Academic League, & a volunteer at the Carlsbad Senior Center. He earned the distinction of Royal Lancer in the NHS and also earned his California Seal of Biliteracy. He scored in the 99th percentile on his SAT and will attend Harvard where he will be studying Economics. "Khang is an outstanding student athlete who exemplifies excellence in every area-athletics, academics, leadership, and service. He has proven himself as a dedicated competitor and team leader, high achieving scholar, and committed member of his school and community. Whether stepping up to compete in a championship match, founding and leading academic organizations, or giving his time in service to others, he consistently demonstrates integrity, humility, and a drive to make those around him better."-Annette Bashford, Carlsbad Volleyball Coach

Makena is a four sport athlete and this season finished 21st in Shot Put and 17th in the high jump in the CIF D1 Championships. She had personal bests in shot put, high jump, and triple jump this year. She has been the school's NCC Rep, a 4 year Athletic Golden Leader, & spent 2 years on Athletic Council. She also volunteers her time coaching 2 rec basketball teams. Makena is a scholar athlete and has done 2 career tract programs-Broadcast/Journalism & Design Mixed Media. "Makena is a selfless person. It is reflected in so much of what she does for our campus and her teams. Taking on roles outside of what she prefers, but is more than willing ot do what is best for the team. Never a complaint.
