It is with a heavy heart that we share the tragic news that CIF San Diego Section
Commissioner Joe Heinz passed away on Tuesday afternoon, surrounded by his loving
family and friends.
Joe was truly larger than life. With his infectious smile and compassionate heart, he had
a remarkable ability to connect with people and build lasting relationships. It is difficult to
find a place in San Diego or Imperial County where Joe was not considered a friend and
a passionate advocate for education-based athletics.
Commissioner Heinz’s leadership and impact on high school athletics were recognized
throughout California. From his years with the Sweetwater Union High School District to
his service as Commissioner of the San Diego Section, Joe always put the needs of
student-athletes first. He often referred to them as “Our Most Precious Commodity,” and
his work throughout an extraordinary career reflected that commitment.
The San Diego Section has lost a tremendous leader, and many of us are mourning the
loss of a lifelong friend.
To Joe’s family, we thank you for sharing such an incredible man with all of us and for
allowing us the privilege of working alongside him. Joe is survived by his wife, Jennifer,
and his three children, Jacob, Jena, and Jessica.
We ask that you please respect the privacy of Joe’s family during this extremely difficult
time.
Thank you,
CIF San Diego Section
