🧡 Welcome Home Allan 🧡

This Wednesday, we were thrilled to welcome Allan home.

After losing his daughter in 2019, Allan needed a safe, quiet place to grieve and heal. Instead, he struggled to regain stability, leading to homelessness and substance use. With support from Scott and others at the San Diego Rescue Mission South County Lighthouse, Allan has made remarkable progress and is now celebrating 13 months in recovery.

Allan has lived in his studio apartment for five months. Before Humble Design arrived, the space was furnished with borrowed institutional-style pieces that never felt like his own. Shiny plastic surfaces, sharp corners, and metal furniture made the apartment feel cold and impersonal. Allan wanted a home that felt warm, comfortable, and welcoming.

When we asked about his vision, Allan requested warm autumn hues, a comfortable couch for relaxing and watching TV, and a bed suited to his height. With the help of our wonderful volunteers, Teresa and Dana B., his apartment was transformed from a sparse, sterile space into a cozy retreat.

This joyful morning would not have been possible without our dedicated warehouse volunteers, who sorted, organized, and gathered all the kitchen and bathroom essentials. A special thank to Kim, who packed Allan’s items with exceptional care and attention to detail.

Every homecoming like Allan’s reminds us that a thoughtfully designed space can do more than furnish a room—it can restore dignity, support healing, and provide a foundation for a brighter future. Thanks to the generosity of our volunteers, donors, and supporters, Allan now has a home that reflects his strength, resilience, and hope.

Congratulations, Allan! We are so proud of your progress and wish you continued happiness, health, and success in the years ahead. If Allan’s story inspires you, please consider supporting Humble Design so more individuals and families emerging from homelessness can experience the comfort, stability, and belonging everyone deserves.

🧡 Welcome Home, Avante 🧡

This Thursday we had the joy of welcoming Avante and his son Tay’an into a completely furnished home alongside our wonderful Palomar Insurance crew. Together, we transformed three bare floors into a warm, living space in just a matter of hours. And as our clients moved quietly through each room, taking it all in, we felt all felt that full-heart feeling that reminds us why we do this work. Tay’an’s face absolutely lit up when he reached his very own room, surrounded by his Kansas City Chiefs heroes watching over him from the walls.

After 9 months of instability, Avante carries a fierce love for his son and a determination that Tay’an will never have to experience homelessness again. He worked hard to connect with Karen from Public Consulting Group (PCG), found his footing, and secured stable housing for his family. Now, with one less weight on his shoulders, he can pour himself into what matters most: cheering his son on as Tay’an chases his dream of one day playing in the NFL.

None of this happens without the people who show up. A heartfelt thank you to our incredible crew — Sera, Andrea, Neelofer, Maya, Stephanie, Kate, Maria, and Carolyn — who poured care and intention into every corner of this home. And to our warehouse volunteers, who keep everything moving behind the scenes, week after week: you are seen, and you are so deeply appreciated.

🧡 Welcome Home, Kaylynn 🧡

This Wednesday, we had the honor of welcoming Kaylynn into her new home.

Five years ago, severe medical issues affecting her feet and legs forced Kaylynn to stop working as a caregiver. The loss of income eventually led to homelessness and living in her vehicle. Through it all, she held onto hope—and a few treasured belongings, including her grandmother’s spice box and a beloved comforter, both of which were restored and included in her new home.

The apartment reveal was especially sweet with Clarence, her cat of six years, eagerly exploring every corner of the space.

Kaylynn’s case manager shared that walking into the apartment after it was furnished was “really emotional in a good way” and that it finally feels like a real home. She described the space as warm, personal, and comforting, and said Kaylynn keeps talking about how much she appreciates all the thoughtful details. Most importantly, she’s happy to be settled and able to relax at home with Clarence.

A heartfelt thank you to our Home Assistant, Katie T., and to volunteers Carrie, Roberta, and Gary, who carefully cleaned, organized, and placed every item with care. We’re also grateful to Laura from Alpha Project and to everyone in the Humble community who helped make this day possible.

Today was about more than furniture—it was about dignity, comfort, and a fresh start.

Welcome home, Kaylynn. 🧡

đź’šWelcome home, Dianađź’š

On Monday, Diana graduated from her program at Solutions for Change a tremendous accomplishment that reflects her hard work, determination, and commitment to building a brighter future. Her success has been so inspiring that Solutions for Change hired her, allowing her to give back and help others on their own journeys.

As if that wasn’t enough to celebrate, yesterday was Diana’s birthday! 🎂 What a beautiful way to begin a new year of life—stronger, healthier, and full of opportunity.

For the first time ever, Diana and her daughter are sharing a home together. They are learning how to navigate this new chapter, giving each other grace, space, and support as they build a life they never had the chance to experience before. To make family visits more comfortable, we also created a cozy sleeping area for Diana’s mom with a pullout sofa and full bedding, making room for generations to gather and connect.

We are so proud of Diana and all she has accomplished. Her story is a reminder that healing, growth, and new beginnings are always possible.

Thank you to our warehouse volunteers who always pick, pack and send us off with our needed items Kim and Ramona. Thank you to our day of volunteers Kim, Ramona, Sergio and Vallerie.

A heartfelt thank you to our incredible volunteer, Anne, and her husband, Mark, for the beautiful original artwork they have so generously shared with us. Their talent, kindness, and generosity have added warmth, beauty, and inspiration to the homes we create. We are truly blessed to have Mark’s unique pieces displayed throughout our homes, where they bring joy and make each space feel even more special. Thank you both for helping transform houses into homes with your gifts and your hearts. ❤️🏡🎨

🧡 Welcome Home, Imani 🧡

This week we were thrilled to welcome Imani into her newly furnished studio apartment in La Mesa. After an extended stay at a shelter and many years of challenges that separated her from family and stable housing, Imani is building a new chapter for herself. Originally from St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, she is working hard, strengthening family connections, and creating a brighter future.

Imani requested a neutral palette with touches of blue and a space that felt calm, comfortable and uniquely hers. Our goal was to transform her dark studio into distinct areas for living, working and relaxing while bringing in light and optimism. Knowing she loves to crochet after work, we created a special yarn centerpiece and included a TV so she can unwind after work and enjoy some well-deserved relaxation.

At the reveal, Imani was joined by her Case Worker, LeNique, from. whose support and dedication have been instrumental in her journey.

We were also fortunate to have three outstanding volunteers—Isabel, Lauren, and Jane—joining us for Décor Day. Despite it being their first time volunteering with us, they instinctively knew how to arrange and organize each item, helping create a warm and welcoming home.

A huge thank you to all of our warehouse volunteers, especially designer Nicole for her fast work in the kitchen and bathroom, and to Jim and Eric O. for expertly installing curtains and completing numerous hanging projects that truly elevated the apartment.

Imani, we hope your new home is a sanctuary filled with light, comfort, and love. Congratulations on this exciting new beginning. And thank you for returning the tape measure we accidentally left behind!

Welcome home, Sierra! 🧡

This week, our team transformed an apartment into a home for Sierra and her children, Ivan and Gemma.
After several difficult years, Sierra is focused on creating a stable and comfortable home for her family and building a new chapter together.

Sierra had a clear vision for her space. She was drawn to a colorful, glamorous living room with vintage and tropical influences, incorporating pink, green, and orange throughout the design. We did our best to create a space that reflected her style and felt like home.

Ivan was equally clear about what he wanted. He loves building things, often using couch cushions and pillows to create forts and imaginative structures. We included building supplies, a pop-up tent, and a basket full of extra blankets to support his creativity.

Gemma loves Hello Kitty and hoped for a vanity of her own. We created a special corner in her room where she can get ready, display her favorite things, and enjoy a space designed just for her.

Thank you to our home sponsor, La Jolla Top Producers, for making this home transformation possible. Thank you to our wonderful volunteers, Steve, Susan, Lori, and Cher, for making Friday’s deco so fun and easy! And of course, thank you to everyone else who helped make this house feel like home. It takes a whole community to do what we do, and we couldn’t do it without everyone coming together with creativity, enthusiasm, and heart.

💜Welcome Home, Tara!💜 This Thursday was truly a family affair as we helped our client, Tara, transform her space into a home. Our volunteer crew was made up of a dedicated family led by Shaune, a day-one volunteer for our San Diego Humble branch, who brought along her son, Ben, and daughter-in-law, Jordan, to help. Shaune has supported countless homes, volunteered in every one of our past warehouses, and generously donated over the years. Having her family serve together made the day especially meaningful. Together, they worked diligently cleaning, arranging furniture, and organizing the kitchen with care and intention, thoughtfully preparing the home for Tara’s family as they entered a new chapter in their lives.

Tara’s connection with Humble Design began back in 2021 while she worked as a case manager for Alpha Project, referring clients to our services. After moving to another agency, unresolved trauma resurfaced and she struggled with sobriety, eventually losing her job and spending a year battling substance use before being incarcerated. Tara now says that jail saved her life, giving her access to the resources and mental health support she needed. Sabrina, Tara’s case Manager from played a critical role in finding housing and getting her back on her feet. Today, she is in a safe and stable place with her loving husband and young daughter, growing in her faith community and surrounding herself with positivity and encouragement. Keeping the family ties going, Sabrina brought her twin sister along for the reveal as well.

When Tara arrived with her husband and daughter, Sunny, they explored their newly designed home with pure joy. Sunny giggled with excitement at every corner, especially delighted by the crafting supplies, games, and books waiting for her. In a touching full-circle moment, Shaune recognized Tara from her days at Alpha Project, when she had referred clients to Humble Design herself. It was a beautiful reminder of the connection and care that make moments like these feel like a little bit of Humble Magic. A special thank you to Lynn Lansing for the beautiful sofa that was donated to this home!

🧡Welcome home Stephanie! 🧡

Last Friday, in partnership with an amazing group of volunteers from , we were honored to help turn Stephanie’s apartment into a home.

After experiencing years of difficult circumstances followed by homelessness, Stephanie has been reunited with two of her boys and is now living in a 2 bedroom apartment where each child has a room of their own reflecting their favorite colors and interests. Mom happily takes the pullout couch, focused on making sure her boys feel safe, supported and comfortable. During the reveal there was an abundance of smiles, excitement, positive acclimations, funny comments, and happy tears as they moved from room to room.

The boys are already doing well in school, gaining confidence, and enjoying the consistency and care they deserve. Their home is filled with love, encouragement, and a growing sense of stability which is only heightened by the items we brought; especially all the family photos that mom provided and asked that we frame and include in the design.

We are so grateful for Lucinda’s Women and Children’s Sober Living as well as Tenisha, their devoted case manager from ECTLC, and Jessica, a neighbor and long time friend who happens to live in the same complex. Together they have provided the support and love to help Stephanie and her boys start a new chapter and continue moving forward together. And of course a heartfelt thanks to all the Coldwell Banker West volunteers - Scot, Khatera, Pauline, Caroline, Jill, Amy, Yvonne and Peter. And to all our warehouse volunteers who helped pull items and pack them and our movers who do the heavy lifting and even help organize the action figures!

This is what rebuilding looks like.
This is what courage looks like.
This is what happens when someone refuses to let their hardest chapter define their future!

🧡 Welcome Home Martin 🧡

This Thursday, alongside a truly wonderful crew from Guild Mortgage, we had the honor of revealing a fresh, beautiful new home to Martin and his two sons. Walking through the rooms together, the deep emotion in the air was palpable, connecting everyone in the space to this incredible family and their new beginning.

Moments like these remind us of what truly matters. No matter what our individual stories are or what challenges we face in our own lives, coming together to show up for others brings everything into perspective. Through tears of joy, Martin shared words we won’t soon forget: “I used to cry every day from sadness, but today, these tears are for happiness.”

Martin is truly resilient. After surviving a targeted attack, he moved to San Diego in search of safety. Yet, the hardships continued, and he and his boys experienced homelessness for two years. Every single day, Martin would look across the street from the shelter at a nearby apartment complex, intentionally aligning his energy and visualizing a future there for his family. Today, that hope is a beautiful reality.

We are incredibly grateful to the caseworkers at for their unwavering support, with a special thank you to Miguel for connecting Martin to our team.

This life-changing day was made possible by a remarkable village: A huge shoutout to the amazing team from Guild Mortgage Darinda, Elena, Ksenija, Ashley, Biren, Amber, and Maranda for pouring your hearts into this installation. A giant thank you to our warehouse team Stacey, Kristina, Delia, Tracy, and Pamela whose hard work ahead of time makes these transformations possible.

🧡 Welcome Home Taryn 🧡

This week we were thrilled to welcome Taryn and her pug, Romeo, into their newly transformed home.

Alongside her case worker, Karin from Family Health Centers of San Diego and supervisor Maricela, Taryn has worked incredibly hard to move from a season of experiencing homelessness, distress, and illness into one of healing and stability.

For the past nine months, Taryn had been living in her studio apartment with only a mattress in the corner. After the recent passing of her brother, her father temporarily moved in with her before returning to Tijuana. Now, as the sole occupant of her apartment, Taryn was overwhelmed with gratitude to finally have a fully furnished and peaceful home of her own.

One of her favorite details was seeing framed photographs of her family throughout the apartment — including pictures of her late husband, her son who lives in Arizona, and other meaningful memories that now make the space feel deeply personal. Taryn requested a calm, spa-like atmosphere that reflected the serenity she is beginning to feel as she continues healing from PTSD.

Today, Taryn is becoming a source of strength and stability for her family — offering a welcoming place for her father to visit and a home where her son can stay when he comes to see her.

A huge thank you to our incredible volunteers Mallory, Michelle, and Cia, who lovingly cleaned, organized, and prepared every detail of the home for move-in day. We are also deeply grateful to our warehouse volunteers, especially Katie T., whose thoughtful selections perfectly reflected Taryn’s style and needs.

Special thanks as well to volunteer Dave, who faithfully helps repair and restore furniture each week, keeping countless pieces out of landfills while helping make homes like Taryn’s possible.

And a huge shoutout to West Elm for their generous donation of 30 rugs, helping us create dignified spaces for our clients. Extra thanks as well to Dennis, our new operations manager, for his interest, encouragement, and input on our progress this week.

Welcome home, Taryn. 🧡
