Food & Care Coalition doesn’t just offer meals and housing — through partnerships with local mental health, medical & dental, and education providers, they’re able to bring these services on-site, all under one roof. Their model is built around meeting people where their needs actually are.

The Other Side Village hosted HomeAid Utah’s annual Diaper Drive Extravaganza — a huge turnout of diapers and volunteers coming together to support Utah families in need. Great to see the community show up.

Most of Food & Care Coalition’s funding comes from family foundations, corporate and community giving, and in-kind donations — not government dollars. That kind of local, private support allows them to run their meal, housing, and case management programs with flexibility.

The Other Side Donuts will become a mainstay at the University of Utah when school starts this fall. The award-winning donut shop was the first choice of U students who will live in the U’s newest 1,447-bed housing complex, Trailhead. It was selected during a vendor competition last year. The coffee and donut bar will be managed by The Other Side Foundation, which offers a myriad of support, lifestyle and housing programs for the homeless.

Their model is based on providing coordinated, wraparound services that address the root causes of homelessness, not just the symptoms.

At a meeting with Utah officials and providers on Capitol Hill this week, national homelessness advisor Robert Marbut announced a major federal shift — moving from “Housing First” to “Human First,” with agencies given one year to adopt the change.

Marbut singled out The Other Side Academy as the “best model in America” for helping people rebuild their lives after addiction and homelessness. We’re proud to stand alongside TOSA and our partners doing this work every day.

Salt Lake City is one of only about 1% of fire departments nationwide running a program that embeds social workers directly with paramedics and firefighters. The Community Health Access Team (CHAT) responds to 911 calls involving mental health crises and drug overdoses, connecting individuals to long-term care and not just emergency treatment. This is the kind of collaborative, whole-person approach that reflects the SolutionsUt mission.
