Quality and safety go hand in hand.

It's a common myth that reducing child care regulations will solve the child care shortage. In reality, research shows that children, families, and providers all benefit from strong health and safety standards, appropriate child-to-provider ratios, and well-qualified educators.

The challenge isn't that standards are too high—it's ensuring programs have the resources they need to meet them while providing high-quality care.

Every child deserves a safe, nurturing environment where they can thrive. 💛

What an incredible few days at the 2026 National Child Care Convention!

Utah showed up strong with almost 200 providers, parents, and advocates coming together to learn, connect, and advocate for children, families, and the early childhood profession.

We are heading home with new ideas, stronger partnerships, and a renewed passion to create positive change in our communities. Together, our voices are stronger, and we're returning more empowered than ever to continue advocating for high-quality child care and the families we serve.

Thank you to everyone who made this event so inspiring. The work doesn't end here—it's just beginning! 💪✨

📍Day 1 of the National Child Care Convention!

We're excited to be here learning, connecting, and bringing back fresh ideas, resources, and inspiration to support Utah's family child care community. We can't wait to share what we learn over the next few days!

This is REALLY important! There are signs Utah is moving away from using funds in a way that stabilizes and it will be devastating for many programs and families if that shifts. More details in the post.

When child care programs have stable funding, they're better able to serve children and families—even when attendance fluctuates.

The Senate is considering to vote on a bill that would prohibit states from using payment practices for subsidized care that help provide that stability. Without them, providers may be less likely to participate in the subsidy system, reducing child care options for families. It could also create additional barriers for children who experience more frequent absences for a variety reasons — including infants, children with disabilities, children in foster care, and children experiencing housing instability — and the programs that serve them.

You don't need a new play center to create new learning opportunities—sometimes all it takes is a new theme!

That same shelf, play market, or dramatic play area can become a grocery store one week, a dentist office the next, then an airport, veterinarian clinic, or library. A simple change in props and signs can completely transform children's play.

Rotating toys and themes:
🌟 Increases engagement and extends play
🧠 Encourages creativity and imaginative thinking
💬 Builds language and social skills through new roles and conversations
🎯 Reduces overstimulation and helps children focus
❤️ Makes familiar materials feel exciting all over again

Meeting dates, agendas, presentations, minutes, and even meeting recordings are available to the public.

Why does this matter? 👀

The most recent meeting included discussion of potential significant changes to DWS child care subsidies—changes that could have a major impact on providers and the families we serve.

Staying informed gives providers the opportunity to understand what is being discussed, ask questions, and share feedback.
