Call 801-997-0722 or .catalystmagazine.net Our growth since 1982 has been steady. Conservative, one might say.

For over 35 years, CATALYST Magazine has had its finger on the pulse of our society's most intriguing movement: the rise of the "cultural creatives" — those who take a whole-systems approach to the world's ecological, social and spiritual crises. This has netted us the enthusiastic support of the community — and a stable of terrific advertisers, who value the unique demographics our editorial cont

I’m thrilled to say that Big Red is our second fur baby to be reserved by his forever mama. He will stay with Luna and the pack for another month so he can learn all his mama has to teach him and enjoy more time with his siblings. Then… home to Portland, Oregon!

Greta Belanger DeJong Hi, this is Greta. I'm trying to post to my personal page but FB insists on me being CATALYST Magazine right now. So be it. This is the image for Greta's Green World #8: Happy Valentine's Day to John deJong, an integral part of my world in all its colors. Keepin' it green together since Feb. 15, 1985 (with a year or two off in the middle).

FEBRUARY 4
“I don’t want a Black History Month. Black history is American history,” says Morgan Freeman. It’s way past time to rewrite the history textbooks. Till then, educate yourself. A great place to start: THE WARMTH OF OTHER SUNS: THE EPIC STORY OF AMERICA'S GREAT MIGRATION and CASTE: THE ORIGINS OF OUR DISCONTENTS, by Isabel Wilkerson, the first woman of African-American descent to win a Pulitzer Prize in journalism.

FEBRUARY 5
Buying a used or new car? Check its smog rating.
Switching from one with a rating of 5 to one rated 8 will reduce your vehicle emissions by 80%!

FEBRUARY 6
How do they do it? The OLD FARMERS' ALMANAC claims an 80-85% accuracy rate for their annual weather predictions made as much as 22 months in advance. Their secret formula considers sunspot activity, tidal action of the Moon, the position of the planets, and other factors, according to their website.

FEBRUARY 7
Good night. Good morning! The 24-hour clock (aka “military time”) is the model predominantly used around the world, where 0:00 is midnight at the beginning of a day, and 24:00 is midnight at the end of a day. So, say, February 7, 24:00 is the exact same time as Feb. 8, 0:00. Egyptians purportedly developed the 24-hour day, counting each segment of their fingers excluding the thumbs for a base-12 system.

Did anyone else see meteors from the Geminid meteor shower over the past few days? 🌠 You can use the Sky Map app or similar to locate the Gemini constellation in real time if you need to brush up on your star scouting skills.

From Greta's Urban Almanac for December:
(See the full December Almanac with links to more content at https://catalystmagazine.net/urban-almanac-december-2021/)

December 13
Geminids Meteor Shower, running annually December 7-17, peaks tonight. Considered by many to be the best shower in the heavens, you can see up to 120 multicolored meteors per hour. The near-full moon will outshine fainter meteors. But the shower is so big and bright that it could still be a good show. [Still going on!]

December 14
Since you may think this is a cool Christmas present for someone, I’m saying it now: Don’t buy a Keurig (which, by the way, its inventor says he regrets having invented). Yes, millions of Americans rely on single-serving machines each morning, with 39,000 pods produced every minute — most of which end up in landfills, even the recyclable ones. If you, too, eschew the more traditional rituals of brewing your morning cuppa and demand this level of convenience, consider a Nespresso, whose pods are marginally easier to recycle.

December 15
Some good news from the nonprofit Southwest Monarch Study which tags and tracks this once-ubiquitous butterfly: Sitings are way up this year! Last year’s numbers topped out at fewer than 2,000. But good size breeding populations were seen in parts of Nevada, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico this year. As of November 23, over 100,000 tagged monarchs had been counted across California overwintering sites with more sitings each day.

December 16
For most of us, the human body’s senses dim with age. That said, clean your tongue. According to Boulder, Colorado holistic health physician John Douillard, regular tongue-scraping will activate the taste buds and improve your sense of taste. Nice side benefits: It will also improve digestion. He recommends copper as it is known to resist bacterial accumulation.

December 17
Remember our feathered friends with this treat: Tie twine around some pinecones and then, with a knife, work peanut butter into the scales. Roll them in wild birdseed. Hang from a tree near a window where you can enjoy your visitors.

From Greta's Urban Almanac entry for November 10:

The first freeze of the season, usually happening this month, triggers an exodus of migrant waterfowl at the Bear River Bird Refuge. However, some bald eagles are settling in for winter and Tundra swan numbers will peak the week before Thanksgiving. The auto tour route at Bear River Bird Refuge is open during daylight hours 365 days per year, weather and road conditions permitting.

Want to go on your own self-guided birding excursion? Get details about the refuge and see the full Urban Almanac for November at https://catalystmagazine.net/almanac/urban-almanac-november-2021/

Learn how to prepare your soil before that snow hits:
"Despite the fact that the trees have dropped their leaves and the perennials have gone dormant, there is a tremendous amount of activity going on under that layer of fallen organic matter. Where spring and summer are cycles of growth, late fall and winter are cycles of decay and regeneration. This is the season to transform the year’s plant growth into nutrients and humus for the following spring, and the billions of organisms in residency will eagerly go to work facilitating this process. The following techniques will help you get there."

CATALYST Magazine / Common Good Press

For 35 years, CATALYST Magazine has had its finger on the pulse of our society's most intriguing movement: the rise of the "cultural creatives" — those who take a whole-systems approach to the world's ecological, social and spiritual crises. This has netted us the enthusiastic support of the community — and a stable of terrific advertisers, who value the unique demographics our editorial content attracts. Our growth since 1982 has been steady. Conservative, one might say. We prefer the word "organic." If conservative growth produces an institution, organic growth grows an organism — something vital, alive, responsive. We think we've got a venerable organism here.

In 2016, we became a nonprofit organization, under the name Common Good Press, to better serve the community and expand our horizons. For many years, people assumed CATALYST already was a nonprofit, so we decided to make the shift. Since becoming a nonprofit, we have taken on the leadership of putting on the annual Utah Clean Air Solutions Fair, an event to bring awareness around our city’s pervasive air quality problems, and bring the community around solutions, and ways to maintain good health during the months of inversion in the Salt Lake valley. If you are interested in getting involved with the 2018 Clean Air Fair, Jan. 19 & 20, please email [email protected].
