Named in honor of one of HAWC’s trailblazing founders, the Dale Orlando Award recognizes those who carry forward Dale’s spirit of courage, leadership, and commitment to creating change.

For more than 20 years, Therese Martin Melden has been a dedicated supporter of HAWC, raising funds and awareness through her annual Galentine’s luncheon and championing HAWC’s mission throughout the North Shore. Her commitment to community extends far beyond HAWC. In 2016, she co-founded Leading Ladies, a civic organization focused on issues that matter to women and girls and the importance of voting.

When she’s not giving back to her community, Therese enjoys ballroom dancing and pastel painting and most recently, embracing her new role as a grandmother!

This June, HAWC staff attended the MassAbility Awareness to Action Conference at Worcester State University to learn and share innovative approaches to supporting survivors of abuse.

Our Director of Programs, Jillian Nebesar, MA, LMHC, and Manager of Community-Based Advocacy, Yamily Byas, presented on the trauma-informed use of the Online Brain Injury Screening and Support System (OBISSS). Our Associate Director of Shelter Services, Maria Rivera, also attended to connect with other organizations implementing this important tool.

Research suggests that between 27% and 100% of women who have experienced intimate partner violence may have sustained a related brain injury (Esopenko et al., 2024). Studies have also found that more women experience traumatic brain injuries related to partner abuse than from sports and military service combined (Haag et al., 2022).

We are excited about the opportunities OBISSS will create for survivors. By helping identify potential brain injuries, this screening tool can connect survivors to appropriate support and resources while also contributing valuable data to strengthen advocacy efforts and improve services for survivors of abuse.

We extend our sincerest gratitude to Senator Joan B. Lovely for her courageous advocacy to protect young people across Massachusetts.

Her steadfast leadership closed a longstanding legal loophole that allowed abuse of minors by those in positions of trust. Adults in positions of trust must be held to the highest standards of accountability. Thank you, Senator Lovely!
