Spring is showing off this May, and we want to show off our May service spotlight, Naomih Noralus. Naomih is a sophomore nursing major at Providence College. Last Summer, she worked as an intern for the Family Van, a community-based patient-centered care program affiliated with Harvard Medical School. Every day, Naomih and the Family Van would be stationed in a different under-resourced neighborhood in Boston. They would provide preventative screenings, health education, referrals, and listen to patient concerns. They also worked with patients to manage any health issues and to promote overall health. Naomih had the opportunity to do screenings for diabetes, high cholesterol, and hypertension which not only broadened her knowledge of these health conditions but allowed her to practice her patient care. She learned how to be an advocate for people in need and expanded her ability to connect with patients and listen to their individual needs so she could provide them with the appropriate care. Naomih says, “Something that was eye-opening was how many people had health problems, but didn't understand what was wrong and would do things to worsen their condition, which is why education is vital with patient care.” This experience has strengthened Naomih’s desire to be a nurse after graduation. She wants to combat health disparities in the world and treat everyone to the best of her ability.

Every day is Earth Day, but April helps us remember. To celebrate, we would like to introduce you to Francesca Twombly, a junior at William & Mary studying Computational and Applied Mathematics and Statistics, with a focus in Mathematical Biology and a minor in Mathematics. Beginning her freshmen year, she has been involved in environmental research through the Keck Environmental Field Lab on campus. This past summer, Francesca got the opportunity to work on two major projects, one through the Keck Environmental Field Lab and the other through the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) under the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA). The first project focused on modifying an effective bycatch reduction device so it could be used in blue crab traps in the Chesapeake Bay to reduce the accidental capture of terrapin turtles. Francesca participated in the data collection, fieldwork, analysis, and presentation of the findings at the William & Mary Fall Research Symposium. The second project, through VIMS, examined living shorelines in the Chesapeake Bay to determine whether they support greater ecosystem productivity than other shoreline types, including beaches, scarps, and natural marshes (they do!). These experiences have solidified Francesca’s love for fieldwork, data collection, and data analysis and interpretation. She says, “Working with live animals and being an active part of their conservation has been an amazing experience that I think everyone should have the chance to be a part of.” Currently Francesca is leading her own team of lab interns on a self-designed research project focusing on the invasive Asian Clam in the James River Basin. After graduation, she hopes to attend a PhD graduate program to continue fostering her love of math and science. Francesca hopes to contribute scientific findings that help not only the ecosystem but our whole society.

As winter comes to an end and spring begins, we want to introduce our March service spotlight! David Nurmi is a junior at UMass Amherst studying Kinesiology. From his passion for exercise and his current education in kinesiology, David developed a personal training program for students and staff at UMass Amherst. The goal of his program is to improve each client’s overall fitness and health. This personal training program is a two-step process. First, he meets with his clients and completes a detailed consultation where they discuss medical history, medications, injuries, health conditions, goals, availability, and nutrition habits. He then conducts a comprehensive fitness evaluation to determine his client’s current strength, mobility, endurance, and movement patterns. From there, he designs and implements a personalized training program that meets each individual's needs and lifestyle. David makes sure each program is structured, individualized, and combines scientific knowledge with practical experience to make sure each client reaches their goals safely and effectively. He says, “What I have found most rewarding is building meaningful relationships with clients and watching their confidence grow over time. Seeing individuals progress from uncertainty in the gym to feeling empowered in their abilities and ultimately transforming their lifestyles has been incredibly fulfilling. It has reinforced my passion for helping others improve their health and wellbeing.” After graduation, David hopes to continue his education and have a career in orthopedics helping patients restore their mobility to enhance their lives.

FEBRUARY SERVICE SPOTLIGHT – February may be a short month, but this feature brings a big impact. Paige Flynn, a sophomore at Syracuse University studying Political Science and Law, Society, and Policy, is a founding member of the Raymond Flynn Foundation, a Rhode Island based community service organization dedicated to raising funds for families who have suffered the loss of a parent. The foundation began in December 2022 and put on its first large scale event in January 2023. Each year, the foundation hosts a New Year’s Day polar plunge. This event brings families and community members together in memory of loved ones who have passed away. In Paige’s role, she plans and coordinates the plunge, designs and orders event t-shirts, advertises events through social media, books live entertainment, and reserves space for events at local restaurants. Paige has also helped plan and organize a 5k race in her hometown of East Greenwich, Rhode Island. This event honored local community members who have been lost. Paige says, “This work has been incredibly rewarding, as it has allowed me to witness the overwhelming support of my community while also teaching me the intricacies of event planning. I am deeply grateful for this experience, which has shown me the power of thoughtful planning and community engagement in bringing people together around a meaningful cause.” Through her work with the Raymond Flynn Foundation and her experiences at Syracuse, Paige has a strong commitment to public service, advocacy, and community engagement. After graduation, Paige hopes to attend law school and pursue a career in public interest or criminal law.

JANUARY SERVICE SPOTLIGHT – New year, new service spotlights! We are kicking off the year with our first service spotlight, Elodie Lapointe, a sophomore at Hampton University majoring in Music Audio Production with a minor in Leadership Studies. Elodie is a college ambassador for Birthday Wishes, an organization in Massachusetts whose goal is to ensure children experiencing homelessness receive the opportunity to celebrate their birthdays. Her main goal is to collect and fill as many “Birthdays in a Box” as possible for children to enjoy on their special day. These “Birthdays in a Box” include basic birthday party supplies including the equipment and mix to make a birthday cake. Elodie also took the initiative to create the Birthday Wishes chapter on Hampton’s campus to connect other students to a cause greater than themselves. On campus she fundraises, spreads awareness, and recruits new members to the organization. Elodie is passionate and drawn to this cause because without Birthday Wishes, she might have never known the joy of a birthday. Elodie says, “I’ve personally never had a birthday party growing up, but because of that one box, I once felt important anyway. That experience stuck with me… Knowing that so many children will feel celebrated because of it is deeply healing. It feels like I’m hugging my younger self and telling her that everything she went through was worth it.” Because of this experience, Elodie knows after graduation she wants a career in nonprofit work. She hopes to create her own nonprofit dedicated to providing exposure to music education and arts for immigrant children and language learning and job support for their parents.
