At Salem Sound Coastwatch, we know that everyone in Massachusetts needs clean water and access to nature--that's why we're voting YES on Question 6 this year! The Nature for All Fund dedicates as much as $100 million per year to clean water, land conservation, greenspaces, environmental justice, and climate resilience, without raising taxes. There is no better time to prioritize our environment!

Are you an experienced birder looking for a winter activity? Is the only bird you recognize a seagull, but you're looking to pick up a new hobby?

It's almost time for our annual winter waterbird survey, and we've partnered with to host a drop-in style event at Lynch Park to help us prepare! Join us to learn about waterbird identification and how to participate in the survey this winter. This event is open to all ages and experience levels, no binoculars required! 🦆🔭🌊

Earlier this month, volunteers and staff bagged and planted eelgrass seeds off of Lynch Park, contributing to ongoing restoration projects throughout Salem Sound! Seeds were also planted last week in Marblehead, marking the end of this year's efforts with MassBays, RAE, and EPA. We'd like to extend our thanks the many volunteers who contributed countless hours to this project--this couldn't have been done without you all. We look forward to seeing how these sites succeed over time! 🌱

Yesterday marked our last School to Sea boat trip of the year! We had a great time with Salem High School’s Oceanography class, who practiced taking sediment, water, and plankton samples, and who learned more about marine life from our educator, Alex. We even had a surprise visitor at our eelgrass site! 🦭🌱

With spooky season upon us, we're sharing more about ghost gear and how it's haunting Beverly Harbor 👻

Ghost gear is one of the most harmful types of marine debris, which is why why we've partnered with the Ghost Trap Project and Beverly Harbormaster to collect ghost traps from the harbor this winter. Land-side volunteers will be needed to assist in sorting and disassembling the traps.

The first session will be October 31st, from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM at Beverly Pier. Check out our LinkTree or events calendar to sign-up. Sessions will occur monthly until March.

🌊🗑️As part of the International CoastSweep, a cleanup effort coordinated by the Ocean Conservancy since 1987, join us in removing and categorizing marine debris. The data collected at these cleanups is entered into the Ocean Conservancy's marine debris database and supports efforts to better understand and reduce marine pollution.

Have you ever wondered why so much effort is put into restoring marine plants? Eelgrass is an important species to the Salem Sound for many reasons, and in an effort to restore it at larger scales, we've partnered with MassBays to map, plant, and study restoration sites. Volunteers can help assist with this project by being trained to monitor eelgrass beds, assisting with the processing of eelgrass seeds, or helping to prepare them for planting.
