Today we welcomed our Clean Beaches & Streams volunteers for another season of community science in action!

This is Salem Sound Coastwatch’s longest-running participatory science program. Volunteers collect water samples from outfalls throughout Salem Sound, helping us maintain a 30-year record of coastal water quality through bacteria monitoring.

Their work does more than generate data, it helps identify pollution sources and supports collaboration with local cities and towns to locate and repair faulty sewer and septic systems. The result: cleaner beaches, healthier ecosystems, and a safer ocean for everyone.

We’re incredibly grateful for the dedication of these volunteers and the impact they make year after year. 💙

What does stormwater pollution look like when you trace it from a neighborhood sidewalk all the way to the ocean?

That question inspired Sidewalk to Sea, a community-designed, life-size floor game built by YouthBuild North Shore CDC students.

Over 10 weeks, students drew from their experiences with neighborhood cleanups and storm drain stenciling to help design and build an interactive game that shows how pollution travels through a watershed. From testing prototypes to shaping the final design, YouthBuild participants played a key role every step of the way.

This project is a powerful example of youth leadership, environmental education, and community collaboration in action.

Sidewalk to Sea was made possible through a Creative County Initiative grant from the Essex County Community Foundation.

We were excited to partner with South Essex Sewerage District on this storm drain mural project near Winter Island! 🎨🌊

Storm drains carry rainwater directly into local waterways without treatment, meaning spilled RV waste, trash, and other pollutants can flow straight into Salem Sound if not disposed of properly.

To help raise awareness, Salem High School student Yareimee Abreu painted a colorful ocean-themed mural around the drain with SSCW’s Susan Marsh as a reminder to help keep our waters clean.

A huge thank you to Yareimee for sharing her talent to support clean water education and stewardship!
