Did you know that marine invasive species can threaten native habitats, outcompete local species, and alter the health of our coastal ecosystems?

Through the Marine Invader Monitoring and Information Collaborative (MIMIC), Salem Sound Coastwatch volunteers help monitor local shores for invasive marine species, providing valuable data that supports early detection and long-term ecosystem health.

No scientific background is required. Community scientists of all experience levels are welcome to participate!

THANK YOU for making our 17th Annual Run for the Beach 5K such an incredible success! 🏃‍♀️🌊🏃‍♂️

More than 500 runners, walkers, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters joined us at Dane Street Beach on Sunday for a morning of community, coastal stewardship, and fun. Despite the summer heat, the energy was amazing and the turnout was one of our biggest yet!

Your participation helps support Salem Sound Coastwatch's work protecting clean water, healthy beaches, and coastal habitats throughout our watershed.

A huge thank you to our volunteers, sponsors, community partners, vendors, and staff who made the event possible, and to everyone who came out to run, walk, cheer, and celebrate with us.

🌱 Join us tomorrow morning as we help maintain the Commercial Street Rain Gardens! Volunteers will assist with litter cleanup and the removal of invasive dodder, a parasitic plant that can spread quickly through native vegetation. Tools and gloves will be provided. We hope to see you there!

🌊 Help monitor marine invasive species in Salem Sound this summer!

Join us for a hands-on community science training where you'll learn to identify invasive seaweeds, tunicates, crustaceans, and other marine organisms while contributing to regional monitoring efforts along the North Atlantic coast.

The program begins at the Winter Island Function Hall, then we'll head to the tidepools for hands-on monitoring practice. Please wear sturdy, closed-toed shoes that can get wet.

At Salem Sound Coastwatch, every day is an opportunity to protect and restore the waters, beaches, salt marshes, and coastal habitats that make our region so special.

From monitoring water quality and restoring habitats to educating the next generation of ocean stewards through School to Sea, we work alongside our community to ensure that Salem Sound remains healthy and resilient for years to come.

This May, Salem Sound Coastwatch partnered with members of the Massachusett Tribe at Ponkapoag and the City of Salem to bring Indigenous fishing traditions to life through the construction of a historically accurate fishing weir at Cat Cove.

Throughout the week, Salem Public Schools 4th graders explored traditional fishing methods, watershed connections, and sustainable relationships with the marine environment through hands-on learning experiences.

A public community event at Dead Horse Beach then invited participants of all ages to engage with the project and learn together.

Today we welcomed our Clean Beaches & Streams volunteers for another season of community science in action!

This is Salem Sound Coastwatch’s longest-running participatory science program. Volunteers collect water samples from outfalls throughout Salem Sound, helping us maintain a 30-year record of coastal water quality through bacteria monitoring.

Their work does more than generate data, it helps identify pollution sources and supports collaboration with local cities and towns to locate and repair faulty sewer and septic systems. The result: cleaner beaches, healthier ecosystems, and a safer ocean for everyone.

We’re incredibly grateful for the dedication of these volunteers and the impact they make year after year. 💙
