Class win: our students built a CI/CD pipeline that checks every pull request and blocks a merge when coverage drops below the threshold.
They learned what a runner does, wrote the GitHub Actions workflow themselves, broke it, fixed it, and shipped it.
That is the point of the work: not just learning syntax, but learning how software actually gets built.

What our class worked on this week:
Take an app from “it runs on my laptop” to live on the public internet.
That meant containerizing it, untangling an ARM64-versus-AMD64 image issue, configuring ingress and DNS, and deploying it to Kubernetes.
Not a tutorial. A real deployment, with the normal amount of debugging and swearing at YAML.
That is what UPLIFT students are building in Salem.

"Entry level. 2+ years experience required."

That line is on job boards every single day, and it is not a hiring filter. It is a wall. You need experience to get experience, and if nobody makes an exception, nothing moves.

Our students are through the first half. They can code. The second half is product, and that is where we need you.

UPLIFT needs volunteer Product Managers and Product Owners. Free 6-month software development program, Salem, Oregon. Our students can build. They have never been taught the product side.

- 4-8 hours a week

"I am not senior enough to mentor anyone."

You have shipped something. You have argued with an engineer about scope and lost. You have watched a feature you fought for go out and land with nobody.

That is the bar. That is already more product experience than anyone in our classroom has.

Our UPLIFT students in Salem can write code. What they have never done is decide what is worth writing.

Last week our students built their own CI/CD pipeline.

"What would I actually be doing?"

Fair question. Here is the real shape of the volunteer PM/PO role at UPLIFT:

- One live session a week with the students. About an hour.
- Review real work: user stories, scope calls, a backlog that is genuinely too long.
- Tell them the truth about tradeoffs. Not the textbook answer. What you would actually do on a Tuesday with a deadline.

That is it. It is not a lecture series and you do not write curriculum. Total commitment is 4-8 hours a week, remote is fine.

Learning to code alone is brutal. Learning to code with people who are figuring it out alongside you? Different game entirely.
That is what UPLIFT is — free 6-month tech program in Salem, OR where students actually work through real problems together. But they need volunteer PMs/POs to coach the product side: writing user stories, running standups, teaching what shipping actually means.
