🍩Happy National Donut Day!

Our Kroc staff and Salvation Army Officers celebrated by delivering Donuts and Coffee to the Salem VA Clinic in honor of the Donut Lassies and our veterans. We continued our celebration at the Kroc Center, handing out donuts and coffee to our guests, telling the Donut Lassies story and thanking veterans and those who served.

Shout out to our community partners Safeway, Roth’s, and Starbucks for their generous donations of coffee and donuts! 👏

Friday is National Donut Day. A lot has changed since Salvation Army Donut Lassies first served soldiers during World War I. One thing has not: the power of showing up for people in need.

As we celebrate National Donut Day Week of Hope, we are putting that same spirit of compassion into action. We will start the morning by delivering donuts to local Veteran Centers, honoring those who have served. Then join us at the Kroc Center as we share donuts with the community from 10:00 to 11:30 AM, and again from 5:00 to 7:00 PM!

From the front lines to our neighborhoods today, the legacy of the Donut Lassies continues through simple acts of care and connection. Donut Day history:
In 1917, The Salvation Army responded to a call for help from U.S. soldiers fighting in France during World War I. At the request of Gen. John J. Pershing, around 250 SALVATION ARMY OFFICERS AND VOLUNTEERS traveled overseas to set up small huts near the front lines, providing soldiers with supplies, clothing, and, most importantly, sweet treats. Faced with the challenge of baking under difficult conditions, two officers — Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance — came up with the idea of frying donuts. These simple yet delicious snacks quickly lifted the spirits of the troops, becoming a SYMBOL OF COMFORT AND CARE in the midst of war.
The women who served the donuts became known as the “DONUT LASSIES” and are often credited with introducing the donut to the American public when soldiers returned home from the war. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, The Salvation Army continued to make and distribute donuts, offering a sense of hope during the Great Depression.
In 1938, The Salvation Army in Chicago established the first NATIONAL DONUT DAY, a tradition created to support those suffering during the Depression and to honor the legacy of the Donut Lassies.

Over the Summer, from June through August, our Day Camps offer ELEVEN weeks of camps and dozens of fun themes to choose from! Themes include Art, Science, LEGO, Dinos, Desserts, Sports, Bluey, Gaming, Space, Swim, and more.
Every session includes camp favorites like swimming and rock wall. Our camps feature Christian values and a fun daily Bible lesson led by The Salvation Army Kroc camp staff.

🫧👶🐣 Calling all Water Babies! SUMMER Baby & Me swim lessons at the Salem Kroc Center for infants and toddlers in our warm pool with their parent.

Sign up NOW for lessons starting in mid-June. They will sell out!

Our classes focus on gentle introduction to the pool and to swim lessons. Parents accompany their infant in the pool and are guided by instructors to learn skills that creates a positive water relationship:

- the safest holds
- back float techniques
- water acclimation
- safe handling in water
- submerges, infant’s face and hair will get wet

It is not too soon to learn fun and safety in the water.

Kroc Aquatics offers group ex classes in our pools Monday through Saturday. Perfect for those who want a fun, low-impact group-ex water workout. The buoyancy of the pool plus the resistance of the warm water make these classes a low-impact activity with a full-body cardiovascular workout!

The absolute best way for kids ages five and over to grow their confidence and skill in the pool is to join a swim team.

The Kroc has our own team open to both members and non-members in the summer. Practice times are Tues-Fri in the late afternoon. Swimmers get a Kroc Swim Team cap and shirt for joining. Coaches instruct on technique, teamwork, and fitness in a fun team setting.

☀️🧸🛝💧 Kroc Toddler Time (plus swim) = Instant PLAYDATE!

Enjoy play and socializing for both children and parents in the Kroc gym. We will bring out the tumbling mats, inflate the bounce houses, set up games, and provide space for FUN!

Every Tuesday and Thursday 10AM-Noon little kids under age 6 can play, tumble, socialize, and explore with their adult in our gym full of fun interactions. PLUS Limited Swim!

Free for Kroc members. Non-members are $8 per child.

💧 Includes access to Parent & Tot limited swim session 11AM-1PM.

The Kroc Leisure pool has a special limited swim daily from 11AM-1PM. It is time designated for guests to float, splash, and swim one-on-one with their parent or care provider. It is the perfect time for Parent & Me swim. Limited swim is free to Kroc members every day, and included with the $8 Toddler Time guest pass.
