What can Saint Carlo Acutis teach our Scouts today?

Saint Carlo Acutis showed us that holiness doesn’t require waiting until adulthood and that everyday talents become extraordinary gifts when used in service to others!
Here is how his life models the core virtues of Catholic Scouting:
• Using Skills for Service: Carlo used his gift for technology to create an online exhibition of Eucharistic miracles and help classmates in need. Whether it’s outdoor survival, coding, first aid, or leadership, a Scout’s talent becomes a true gift when it serves the troop and community.
• Noticing the Overlooked: Carlo made a point to care for those living on the margins—the poor, the elderly, and the homeless—listening to them and treating everyone with dignity. That is Scouting service in action: noticing who needs help and welcoming all with respect.
• Courage to Stand Firm: Carlo lived his faith boldly, even when it meant swimming against the stream. Scouts can imitate his courage by standing up to bullying, choosing honesty, and doing what is right regardless of peer pressure.
• Faith in Daily Life: For Carlo, faith wasn't confined to Sunday Mass. It shaped how he played sports, used technology, treated friends, and served others.

You don't have to wait until you are older to make a difference. Be faithful in ordinary life, use your gifts generously, and look for Christ in everyone you meet!

Saint Peter Claver is a powerful role model for scouts because he practiced service, courage, compassion, respect, perseverance, teamwork, and faith in action. He dedicated his life to defending people who were being treated unjustly and to restoring their sense of human dignity. He served people who were suffering.

Saint Peter Claver ministered in Cartagena, Colombia, where enslaved Africans were brought under terrible conditions. He went to meet them with food, medicine, and practical assistance. He also cared for the sick, visited prisoners, and served other people who were poor or marginalized.

This reflects the Scout commitment to help others. Scouts can imitate him by:
• Serving at food pantries or shelters
• Visiting the sick or elderly
• Helping someone who is lonely or excluded
• Taking responsibility for difficult service projects
• Offering practical help before giving advice

Saint Peter understood that love must be expressed through concrete action.
He can inspire scouts to ask three questions:
1. Who is being ignored or treated unfairly?
2. What practical help can I provide?
3. Will I continue doing what is right even if it is difficult or unpopular?

Religious Activities are a great way to learn more about our Catholic faith through the lives of Saints like Saint Teresa of Calcutta who made service the center of her life.

Mother Teresa began listening to God when she was a young girl, when she was very involved in her parish in what is now North Macedonia. She listened to God when she travelled hundreds of miles to join a religious order for women in Ireland when she was 18. Then, she listened to the Reverend Mother of her order and went to India to teach. While on retreat, she really listened to God speaking to her – and it would change her life.

Jesus taught, “Whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant” (Mk 10:43). Saint Teresa lived this teaching by dedicating herself to people who were poor, sick, abandoned, or forgotten. Pope John Paul II described her as someone who chose not only to be among the least, but to become “the servant of the least.”

Saint Teresa of Calcutta is a strong role model for scouts because she lived the values of service, compassion, courage, leadership, perseverance, and respect for every person. Her life shows that even small acts of kindness can become a powerful witness to God’s love. She can inspire scouts to ask three questions:
• Who is being overlooked?
• What practical help can I offer?
• Can I do this with love, even if no one notices?
