Youth sports betting is already happening in Minnesota – even though it’s illegal.

Of the 11,000 students who recently placed a bet, many say they’re betting on sports and games. This includes pickup games with friends, professional games, esports and more.

Our free toolkit Lead the Way to Safer Play, helps teens and families understand the risks and start conversations.

Every three years, thousands of Minnesota students take a survey about their lives and activities, including questions about gambling. Their answers help us better understand their experiences and how to support them.

This year’s survey format changed, so we can’t compare the data to past years or draw statewide conclusions.

Still, over 11,000 students in grades 8, 11 and 12 say they recently placed a bet.

Here’s what we learned about students who are betting:
- They were evenly represented across urban, suburban and rural communities and across grades
- Sports and games dominated – from video games and esports to real sporting events
- About 1 in 4 say they gamble weekly
