The Dakota name for June is Ważuṡteca Ṡa Wi (wah-zshoo-shtay-cha sha wee). Wild strawberries are in season this time of year and are sweet and delicious right from the vine.

Our Anishinaabe relatives call them Ode Min, Heart Berries, and they play an important role in their creation story.

The Grand Opening is tomorrow! The weather looks beautiful, but it will be warm! We are expecting highs in the 80’s, so please dress appropriately for the heat and take precautions for extended time outdoors! There are drinking fountains inside and outside at the Center, so we encourage guests to bring a reusable water bottle. We will also have additional beverages available at our food vendors.

Seating During Remarks & Ribbon Cutting
🌿We will have a tent with reserved seating for elders and those with limited mobility, and a small amount of seating for additional guests during the program. We cannot guarantee seating for all guests during the ceremony.

Food
🌿We are thrilled to offer several complimentary food options for guests during the event! There will be food from Wanna Wotapi, Owamni, Gatherings Café and Rob’s Catering. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options will all be available.

We are expecting a very large turnout for the Grand Opening, this Friday! We recommend giving yourself extra time as parking will be limited. We also encourage guests to walk, bike, carpool, or use public transit whenever possible.

Transportation & Parking Options

🌿Elder parking and those who need additional assistance: There are two small lots (GPS: 265 Commercial St.) located across the street from the entrance to Waḳaƞ Ṭípi Center (see map below). This complimentary parking is designated for our elder guests and those who need assistance. We will have volunteers available to provide walking assistance to the event.

🌿Pay Lot: Entrance located at E Prince St and Willius St. (GPS address: 433 Kellogg Blvd, St Paul, MN 55101). The parking fee is $2.53 for the day. A complimentary shuttle service will be running back and forth between this lot at the Prince St entrance and the Waḳaƞ Ṭípi Center throughout the entire event. Please see the map below for the lot location and shuttle pick-up spot. A firetruck will be on site making this lot easily identifiable!

🌿Biking: We encourage those who are able to bike to the Grand Opening. The Waḳaƞ Ṭípi Center is located right off of the Bruce Vento Regional Trail. We will have four large bike barricades available onsite near the Center to lock your bike during the event.

Development of the Waḳaƞ Ṭípi Center was made possible through the work of dozens of Dakota community members over many years. We’re excited to share this special video that features several of them!

We look forward to celebrating the opening of the WTC at our Grand Opening on Friday, May 29th.
Here is the schedule for the day:
11:00am – 12:30pm: Remarks & Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
12:30 – 2:00pm: Doors Open, Mingle, Explore Exhibits & Feast!

We are expecting large turnout, so we will be providing helpful information throughout the week on parking, food, etc. To get all this information in one place, register for the event at wakantipi.org/events
