Read with Me Weekends
During June and July, the Altrusa Club of St. Augustine visits the preK classrooms at First Coast Technical College with free books for all the children. We encourage the children to bring the books home and read them with their families. Many of the books we have for the children have been donated by Lisa Libraries
Pictured are two of our newest members, Cathy O'Dell and Christine Jenne helping one of the children pick out a book. Thank you Cathy and Christine for helping the children today.

June's "Cake Friday" has been delivered. On the last Friday of each month, Altrusa Club of St. Augustine delivers birthday backpacks to all the guests at Port in the Storm who have had a birthday that month. The backpacks contain toiletries, a blanket and gift cards. The Altrusans also deliver a birthday cake for all the guests and staff to share. The guests have labeled the Friday celebrations "Cake Friday." We always try to include some treats for all of the guests as well. Port in the Storm is a shelter in St Augustine for homeless youth. In the photographs is Lindy Deyto, the Development Support Specialist for St. Francis House & Port in the Storm. Read with Me Weekends
With the some preK children in St Johns County, literacy continues in a very special way through the summer. For the preK children in the summer program at First Coast Technical College, the Altrusa Club of St. Augustine provides a book for each child on Fridays. We encourage the child to bring the book home and read it with his or her family.

In honor of Flag Day, we would like to post this 1994 photograph by Ken Barrett of the American flags flying on the Bridge of Lions. Before the bridge was rebuilt, the Altrusa Club of St. Augustine sponsored the fying of the American flag on the bridge. The project began in 1979.

This week members of the Altrusa Club of St. Augustine traveled to Starke to teach a group of Dimple Overstreet's friends how to make Kindness Stars. The Kindness Stars are a project of our club that we use to spread a little bit of kindness throughout our community. The Star is an origami Moravian star with a special message attached.

Project FLY Grant
The Altrusa Club of St. Augustine is honored to present to Mary Alice Hayes, the Program Director for Project FLY (Five Learning Years), a grant for $2,500.00 from the Altrusa International Foundation. Project FLY targets students in the voluntary pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and first grade who are reading below grade level. Through using proven curriculums and experienced tutors who work with these students during the school day the program has the goal of closing the literacy gap for these students.
Project FLY is part of Investing in Kids - INK which is the St Johns Education Foundation, a direct support organization for the St Johns County School District. The grant funds received for Project FLY will be doubled by a matching grant from the state. The funds will be used to pay the salaries for some of the Project FLY tutors.
