Tonight I visited neighbors in a two block area around our home.
I made sure they knew I was their neighbor. I gave each a flyer and a small information sheet.
Here’s what I experienced:
After the first visit (I was a little nervous) I eased up, and began to enjoy reconnecting, or meeting my neighbors for the first time.
I began with:
I am visiting with my neighbors about how we can celebrate the 250th right here in our neighborhood.
I pointed to the flyer now in their hands: We can put a small light in our window for democracy, voting and civil rights, free speech, rule of law.
It’s what we’re for, rather than all the divisions. We will be honoring things the founders stood up for.
Every neighbor responded positively. Half really liked the idea and likely will go LIGHTS ON!
I invited them to come to our house. ...to be with neighbors as we learn how to share LO4D.
I think this will build more positive energy, and become something that draws us together as neighbors over time.
This is such a simple idea.
If you have a night light or an electric candle that goes on at night and off during the day, you can put that in your window and tonight your light will be on for democracy.
And I liked getting to know my neighbors!
There was joy in doing this.

So, wherever you live, come to the Light up your Street for Democracy gathering tomorrow.
Let me know if you are coming. RSVP
If you want to bring a little food, something to share, please do. Or, just “Come On Down!”

Art Metallic Expo featuring Irwin Bronson on
Friday, May 8, 2026 11:45-1:30.
Located at St Cyprian’s Mission House at

Mr. Bronson was born the same year the Brown versus Board of Education decision became law of the land. Court decision set in motion the reality of the times as he, his brother Billy, his sister Debbie, and their neighbor’s three children became the first Afro-Americans to enroll in the Fullerwood School, a white public school in the nation’s oldest city.

Compassionate Women will meet Saturday, May 16th 12noon-1:30 at New Mt Moriah, 676 Christopher St. Our luncheon will be hosted by the ladies at New Mt Moriah. I think this is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to broaden our friendships and to embrace our African American sisters. In these times when politics and wars drive us apart, it is a gift to have a safe place to gather, share our stories, and eat together. Compassionate Women strives to provide this place to be together across all that can divide us, and support and care for each other.

This will be a covered dish luncheon with the main part provided by the New Mt Moriah ladies. If you’d like to bring fruit, salad or dessert that’s great but there will be plenty of food so please don’t let food stop you from coming. (Please note, no pork in consideration of all.)

Please share this information with the ladies at the Islamic Center and any others you think might be interested in joining us on May 16th.

We hope to see you on the 16th!
Best,
Ervin

Today we gathered at our Executive Director Robin’s to do the behind the scenes mundane work that keeps Compassionate Saint Augustine going. You know you’ve found your people when the drudgery of strategizing and daily operations is filled with belly laughs and joyful hearts.
