Tonight I visited neighbors in a two block area around our home.
I made sure they knew I was their neighbor. I gave each a flyer and a small information sheet.
Here’s what I experienced:
After the first visit (I was a little nervous) I eased up, and began to enjoy reconnecting, or meeting my neighbors for the first time.
I began with:
I am visiting with my neighbors about how we can celebrate the 250th right here in our neighborhood.
I pointed to the flyer now in their hands: We can put a small light in our window for democracy, voting and civil rights, free speech, rule of law.
It’s what we’re for, rather than all the divisions. We will be honoring things the founders stood up for.
Every neighbor responded positively. Half really liked the idea and likely will go LIGHTS ON!
I invited them to come to our house. ...to be with neighbors as we learn how to share LO4D.
I think this will build more positive energy, and become something that draws us together as neighbors over time.
This is such a simple idea.
If you have a night light or an electric candle that goes on at night and off during the day, you can put that in your window and tonight your light will be on for democracy.
And I liked getting to know my neighbors!
There was joy in doing this.
So, wherever you live, come to the Light up your Street for Democracy gathering tomorrow.
Let me know if you are coming. RSVP
If you want to bring a little food, something to share, please do. Or, just “Come On Down!”
