JPNS Monthly Spotlight: Can oral Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) prevent nerve degeneration? A new Phase 2 study evaluated NR's ability to protect and regenerate small sensory axons using a capsaicin-induced human experimental model. https://bit.ly/4oiiziK
In this double-blinded, placebo-controlled study, volunteers received 1000 mg of NR twice daily or a placebo. Researchers applied a 0.1% capsaicin patch for 48 hours to induce intraepidermal nerve fiber loss and monitored the healing process.
The results showed that NR supplementation did not prevent the capsaicin-induced degeneration of epidermal sensory nerve fibers. Furthermore, the oral NR did not result in elevated plasma NAD+ levels, though skin NAD+ slightly increased.
Regarding regeneration, researchers found no difference in the amount of epidermal reinnervation between the NR and placebo groups at the 90-day visit. However, a small but statistically significant increase in sensory nerve fibers was noted at 60 days.
Conclusion: Current data suggests oral NR supplementation at these doses cannot be recommended to prevent neuropathy or improve nerve regeneration in humans. Much higher doses may be required to achieve the pharmacological effects seen in earlier models.

Multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN) is a rare inflammatory neuropathy causing progressive muscle weakness – and a remarkable example of how understanding disease mechanisms can drive effective treatments and offer lessons for the broader field.
At this year's PNS Annual Meeting in Maastricht (13–16 June 2026), the Inflammatory Neuropathy Consortium (INC) will dedicate its Education Course session to exactly this story: "MMN: How Insight in Disease Mechanisms Led to Clinical Trials and What Lessons We Learned for Other Inflammatory Neuropathies."
The session will explore:
🔬 How mechanistic discoveries in MMN shaped the path to clinical trials
💡 Translational insights applicable to other inflammatory neuropathies
🎓 Lessons for accelerating research and improving patient outcomes
We look forward to seeing you in Maastricht! 🇳🇱

🔬 Can precision medicine stop CIPN before it starts? In our latest Peripheral Nerve Podcast, we explore a game-changing topic: using biomarkers to predict and mitigate chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy.
We are honored to have Professor Roser Velasco, Neurologist and Principal Investigator at Institut Català d'Oncologia in Barcelona, join hosts Paola Alberti and Susanna Park. Professor Velasco’s research is at the forefront of neurotoxicity, and she shares groundbreaking insights into personalized approaches for cancer patients.
🎧 Listen now to learn about:
• Which genetic and genetic markers are showing promise.
• The role of serum biomarkers like neurofilament light chain.
• How neurophysiology can improve risk assessment.

The Charcot-Marie-Tooth and Related Neuropathies Consortium (CMTR) invites expressions of interest to host funded Training and Certification Workshops in both pediatric and adult CMT clinical outcome measures, including an in-person session hosted at your institution from a CMT Master Trainer. This pilot will expand the global network of trained clinical evaluators and strengthen trial-ready data collection, with emphasis on new sites in South America, Africa, and Asia. Expression of Interest forms are due June 30.

The Peripheral Nerve Society (PNS) and the World Muscle Society (WMS) are pleased to share that the two societies are exploring a joint international congress in Europe in September 2029. Both organisations are actively evaluating this opportunity as a way to bring together the global muscle and nerve communities, encourage cross‑disciplinary dialogue, and enhance scientific collaboration. The aim is that this joint event would take the place of each society’s individual annual meeting for 2029. Current projections indicate that a combined congress could draw up to 3,000 attendees from over 65 different countries, making it one of the largest gatherings in the neuromuscular field. As part of this exploratory process, we are inviting expressions of interest from potential Local Organising Committees based in European cities. Eligible committees must consist of current WMS or PNS members. This step will help both societies assess feasibility and potential host locations. Please use this link to learn more:
